India cricket team assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has hinted at possible changes to the playing XI following the loss against South Africa in the Super 8 tie on Sunday. Suryakumar Yadav and co. were handed a 76-run thumping by the Proteas at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, bringing an end to their winning streak. Following the defeat, assistant coach ten Doeschate has revealed if the team will make amends to their line-up or if they will stick to the same XI.
Will Samson replace Abhishek?
Speaking at the post-match press conference, ten Doeschate addressed the possibility of bringing Sanju Samson back into the line-up in order to maintain the left-right combination. The India assistant coach said that the team will ponder on whether they need to stick to the same line-up which has been doing well in the recent past or if some forced changes have to be made. Nevertheless, the loss to South Africa has dented India’s chances of making it to the semi-final with ease, leaving them at a position where they must win all their remaining Super 8 games. Samson has featured in just one match in the T20 World Cup so far.
“Look, there’s a lot of inexperience in the team and you want a settled side. These guys have done it all before. They’re all fantastic players. So do you stick or twist? Do you stick with the guys who we feel have performed really well over the last 18 months and who are maybe just short of a few runs now? Or do we twist and bring in Sanju, who’s also a fantastic player and obviously helps tactically by having a right-hander at the top of the order? I’m sure that will be a talking point over the next few days going into these two very important games,” India assistant coach ten Doeschate said.
After three back to back ducks, Abhishek managed to score 15 runs from 12 balls in the game against SA. However, he struggled to deal with the spinners and was eventually dismissed by Marco Jansen. Ishan Kishan, his opening partner who was phenomenal in the World Cup until Sunday, was dismissed for a duck.
