Girl Scout Cookie Season is in full swing, and one special troop from Chicago is especially hard at work.
Troop 26286 lives in a housing community called Volunteers of America – Hope Manor II in the city’s Englewood neighborhood. Many members are daughters or family members of veterans who reside in the veteran housing development.
For the roughly 30 girls in the troop, cookie sales make a big difference, helping to pay for everything from uniforms to field trips and the membership fee that some families may not be able to afford.
“Without our cookie sales, we would not be able to serve a lot of these girls,” said Diamond Franklin with Volunteers of America. “It’s a safe space for them. This troop is a love letter to a small part of Englewood. We encourage our girls to think outside the box, engage their curiosity and be sisterly. Most of all, we try to teach by doing.”
Through the troop, the girls are learning important life lessons.
“They teach us to be kind to one other and to share,” said Kaia Butler.
“If you like want to do something and you need somebody to talk to, you can talk to them. Because they’re like your sister, like your other family,” added Amore Binion.
The annual Girl Scouts membership fee is $45 per child. The troop’s goal this season is to sell 2,100 boxes of cookies, with sales running through March 11, to ensure membership can continue to remain accessible for all.
