Flights from Chicago to Mexico canceled amid violence following cartel leaders killing

Several flights between Chicago and multiple major cities in Mexico – including popular tourist destinations – were canceled on Sunday as turbulent scenes erupted following the killing of the country’s top drug cartel leader by the Mexican military.

Following the killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs released an advisory telling U.S. citizens in Mexico to shelter in place due to “ongoing, widespread security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity in many areas” of the country.

Oseguera Cervantes was wounded in an operation to capture him Sunday in Tapalpa, Jalisco about a two-hour drive southwest of Guadalajara and he died while being flown to Mexico City, the Defense Department said in a statement. The state of Jalisco serves as the base of the cartel, which is known for trafficking huge quantities of fentanyl and other drugs to the United States.

Unrest was also reported in the tourist seaside city of Puerto Vallarta, where videos circulating on social media showed smoke rising into the air.

Travelers heading to or from Puerto Vallarta were also affected.

Two American Airlines flights were canceled, while a third American Airlines flight that departed O’Hare Airport at 8:07 a.m. was diverted to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.

UA1452, a United Airlines flight bound for Puerto Vallarta, left O’Hare Airport at 8:43 a.m. but was diverted to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas.

American Airlines is offering fare waivers for flights between Feb. 22-24, according to its website. VivaAerobus passengers scheduled to fly on Feb. 22 can change their travel one time at no cost.

AeroMexico implemented a protection policy for travel on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23.
