Bryant – 775 New Hampshire – 660 Vermont – 613 UMBC – 446 Binghamton – 403 Maine – 314 VMI – 159The America East Conference has a pair of new team champions. UMBC won the men’s team title by nearly 50 points over Binghamton, the 2x defending men’s champions, while Bryant took the women’s team title by 115 points over defending champ New Hampshire.
The final session of the meet kicked off with the women’s 1650 free, where New Hampshire sophomore Lydia Hart clocked a 16:28.27 to earn the win. Hart blew away her season best of 17:09.65, but was way off her conference record of 16:14.71, which she set at last year’s America East Championships. Additionally, Hart was unfortunately just off the NCAA qualifying time of 16:25.29, which would have earned her an invite to the NCAA Championships next month.
The men’s 1650 free saw Yonatan Ahdut claim victory in 15:29.98. The NJIT freshman was just off his career best of 15;29.90.
Vermont senior Natalie Schick won the women’s 200 back in an impossibly tight race with UMBC grad student Alice Marini. Schick was out with the early lead, splitting 56.87 on the opening 100, while Marini was 58.09. Marini then chipped into Schick’s lead over the back half of the race. In the end, Schick finished in 1:58.94, just 0.01 seconds ahead of Marini (1:58.95).
Bryant freshman Zach Proulx claimed victory in the men’s 200 back, swimming a 1:45.66. His performance last night marks a new career best.
UMBC junior Ashley Gutshall set a new America East conference record in the women’s 100 free, popping a 49.20 en route to winning the event. Gutshall took a little over a tenth-of-a-second off the previous championship record (49.32) and the conference record (49.31).
UMBC really showed out in the 100 free, as freshman Braden Weise won the men’s 100 free in 43.58. Weise’s swim marks a new championship record in the event. UMBC also saw Sean Neils (junior) take 2nd in 43.87, while Matthew So (freshman) was 3rd in 44.05, and Axel Mori (sophomore) finished 4th in 44.17.
That same quartet, unsurprisingly, went on to win the men’s 400 free relay. So led off in 43.96, then Neils clocked a 43.89 on the 2nd leg, Mori posted a 43.68 on the 3rd leg, and Weise anchored in 44.00. The team swam a 2:55.53, setting a new America East conference record.
Binghamton freshman Julia Iwanow won the women’s 200 breast in 2:15.57. Jocie Niemczyk, a Bryant sophomore, was a very close 2nd, touching in 2:15.77.
NJIT sophomore Borys Endle won the men’s 200 breast in 1:56.32, winning the race by nearly 3 seconds. He was out in 55.32 on the opening 100, then came home in 1:01.00 on the back half.
The women’s 200 fly saw Bryant sophomore Ruby Tonelli finish 1st in 1:59.21.
Joey Stauss, a Maine sophomore, won the men’s 200 fly in 1:46.53. The swim marks a new career best for Stauss, as well as a Maine program record.
New Hampshire won the women’s 400 free relay in 3:21.08, setting a new conference record in the process. Audrey Mahoney (49.53), Lydia Hart (50.13), Teagen Jeffers (50.61), and Sydney Leblic Garcia (50.81) combined to get the job done. The previous conference record was held by New Hampshire, a relay in which Mahoney was also a member.
