ALBANY, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the New York State Liquor Authority will temporarily suspend enforcement of alcohol service hours on Sunday between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., allowing bars and restaurants to open early for fans watching the Olympic gold medal hockey game.
The governor noted that the change applies only to areas not under a State of Emergency. Any county included in Saturday’s blizzard‑related emergency declaration including all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, Albany, and several others, will not be permitted to offer early alcohol service.
“Our top priority remains keeping people in communities impacted by the blizzard safe and off the roads,” Hochul said.
Hochul also reflected on her own memories of Olympic hockey, recalling watching the 1980 game as a Syracuse University student. “The whole place stopped and watched together. I hope a new generation of New Yorkers gets that same moment tomorrow.” she said.
Fans outside the emergency zones will be able to gather early as Team USA faces Team Canada at 8:10 a.m. in the men’s gold medal match.
