Tokyo Disneyland Is Officially Building the Most Expensive Attraction in Disney History

Tokyo Disneyland is currently undergoing a massive transformation, and it’s officially breaking records before the first guest even steps into the queue. According to recent WDW News Today reports, the budget for the reimagined Space Mountain and its surrounding Tomorrowland plaza has skyrocketed to a staggering ¥70.5 billion—roughly $460 million.

Even with the complexities of inflation and shifting exchange rates, this price tag solidifies the project as the most expensive attraction Walt Disney Imagineering has ever built.

While the original Space Mountain closed its doors in July 2024, construction on the new version is already well underway, with the massive new show building and its signature white spires now visible on the skyline. Rumored to be titled Space Mountain: Earthrise, the ride is being completely rebuilt from the ground up to offer an entirely new experience.

“It’s not only a whole new ride experience, but the story also has so much emotion,” said Kathleen Davis, a producer for Walt Disney Imagineering, when the ride update was announced. “Through the queue and then on the ride, we see our connection to our planet and gain a new perspective for how special it is in all the universe. It’s a roller coaster with both thrill and heart.”

    The Future of Tomorrowland

The record-breaking budget isn't just for the coaster; it also covers an all-new plaza designed to represent a future where humans live in harmony with nature. Owen Yoshino, Senior Creative Director for Walt Disney Imagineering, notes that the overarching story is about "appreciating our home (Planet Earth)" and spreading awareness about caring for the environment.

Once the sun sets, the plaza will transform into an immersive world of light and soundscapes, offering guests a place to relax among design elements meant to inspire hope for the future.

    Opening Dates to Watch

Travelers planning a trip to Tokyo should mark their calendars for 2027, when the new Space Mountain is scheduled to debut. But that isn't the only change coming to Tomorrowland. A new Wreck-It Ralph attraction—a $200 million reimagining of the former Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters space—is also slated to open in Spring 2027.
