ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The community gathered in prayer as the four-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine approached. They met at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church for a candlelight vigil.
Irene Lyko Smith, the vice president of RocMaidan and a volunteer group supporting Ukraine, reflected on the challenges of the past four years but found hope in her faith.
“I think what a lot of people don’t understand is Ukrainians as a whole are very religious whether you’re Christian, Muslim, Jewish — it doesn’t matter — they’re all very much into the faith that they believe in,” said Smith.
RocMaidan volunteers shipped their 30th container of aid to Ukraine on Feb. 14. Irene said more than 487 tons of supplies have been sent.
