A building in Chicago was scorched by flames Saturday afternoon, sending a plume of dark smoke into the air as crews battled the blaze.

Around 5:20 p.m., a massive plume of grey smoke could be seen rising from a building near the 3000 block of West Madison Street in Chicago’s East Garfield Park neighborhood.

    Video and photos from the scene show huge flames erupting from the roof of what appeared to be a multi-unit apartment building.

    The rising smoke could be seen from a distance, including from nearby I-290.

    Several firetrucks could also be seen in the area as crews responded to the scene. At one point, three ladders were extended to the roof of the building.
