ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Nearly 900 athletes from across New York participated in the Special Olympics New York State Winter Games held across the Finger Lakes region on Saturday. The event showcased the power of inclusion through sport at no cost to the athletes.
Competitions took place in seven sports. Organizers said the opportunity to learn and compete in these sports is something the athletes wouldn’t have without the Special Olympics.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported from outside the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester, where athletes received free health screenings.
Peter Dailey, a figure skater since age five, expressed his love for the challenge of the sport.
“It means a lot to me, being able to show off my talent and being able to meet new friends,” said Dailey. “Always really important to me, and being able to teach people I can do anything. I put my mind to it. What most people would look down at us thinking, you can’t do that. And I’m always so excited when I can show them they wrong and I can actually do it.”
The closing ceremony was scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riverside Convention Center, featuring medal presentations and a group victory dance.
Special Olympics New York is the largest state chapter in the country, serving more than 48,000 athletes with year-round training, competition, and health screenings.
