Cool conditions grip the Chicago area as lake-effect snow targets northwest Indiana

While last weekend brought unseasonable conditions and temperatures in the mid-to-upper 50s, weather more typical of mid-February has returned.

With highs expected to only reach the low-to-mid 30s on Saturday, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack explained “we’re kind of fluctuating back between winter and spring.” Ahead of some potential snow overnight, clouds will dominate through much of the day, and temperatures will climb above the freezing mark to around 35 degrees.

It will feel significantly colder, however, with winds dropping feels-like temperatures roughly 10 to 12 degrees. As evening arrives, mostly cloudy skies will take hold, and a disturbance will move in from the north.

While the Chicago area will be on the eastern fringe of the looming winter system, a light dusting of snow is a possibility, Sack said, noting it won’t be a major accumulating event. Overnight low temperatures will drop into the low-to-mid 20s, with light snow developing and winds from around 10 to 20 miles per hour pushing wind chills into the single digits.

Northeastern Illinois will experience some flurries, but the brunt of the snowfall will occur in Porter and LaPorte counties in northwest Indiana. Accumulating snow is possible both Sunday and Monday in those areas, with meteorologists forecasting up to five inches through Monday.

Meanwhile, winds of between 10 to 20 miles an hour will make it feel much chillier.

Travelers should take extra time on Sunday night, especially along portions of Interstate 80 and the Chicago Skyway, where snow is likely. Be aware – conditions could change rapidly.

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest impacts are expected for Porter County and areas east where several inches of snow will be possible. Drivers should prepare for localized poor visibility, snow-covered roads and potentially hazardous travel.

From Sunday night to Monday morning, clearing will occur on the Illinois side.

Monday will begin on an extremely cold note, with wind chill values around zero and perhaps falling below zero in some spots. In northwest Indiana, lake-effect snow will continue before eventually tapering off in the afternoon.

Another chance of snow is likely next week – but it won’t arrive right away.

First, temperatures will rise above the freezing mark on Tuesday, with highs climbing into the low 40s. Then, on Wednesday, a few clipper systems are expected to move through, bringing the possibility of both rain and snow, Sack said.

By Thursday, conditions will be a little cooler but also a little drier, with highs sitting around 40 degrees.

As the work week ends, readings will climb back into the upper 40s. While some precipitation is possible, Sack said it will likely stay north of the Chicago area.

When it comes to next weekend – don’t expect clear skies – more chances for rain and snow are in store.
