Olympics on Saturday: Pittsford’s Chris Lillis secures repeat gold in mixed aerials final, guide to other events

LIVIGNO, ITALY – Pittsford native Chris Lillis is golden once again.

Lillis helped lead Team USA to a second straight Olympic gold in the mixed aerials final, soaring to the top of the podium alongside Connor Curran and Kaila Kuhn. The Americans entered the competition looking for redemption — and delivered, defending their title.

‘Soaking up every minute’; Chris Lillis, local gold medalist, prepares for second Olympics

For Lillis, the win marks back-to-back Olympic gold medals in mixed aerials. He was also part of the championship trio at the 2022 Beijing Games alongside Ashley Caldwell and Justin Schoenefeld. Lillis is continuing a decorated career that includes 15 World Cup podium finishes.

The team each landed strong tricks for a combined total of 325.35 points, defeating Switzerland by more than 28 points. In a surprising twist of events, Switzerland snagged silver while China, the heavy gold-medal favorite coming into this event, claimed bronze. You can see the full results here.

    Competition Recap

Lillis, alongside Caldwell and Schoenefeld, stunned a nearly unbeatable Chinese team on home turf to take home Olympic gold at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The U.S. team, with Lillis at the helm, went on to win the two most recent world championship titles in 2023 and 2025.

Just like Beijing, the gold came down to two teams: China, with two newly crowned Olympic champions, and the U.S., with two youngsters and a seasoned veteran.

Xu landed a back full-full-full, the same trick that won her back-to-back Olympic gold on Wednesday. Kuhn matched her with a triple of her own but fell a little over two points behind Xu.

After a crash by Wang Xindi on one of the harder tricks in this event, Curran stomped down a full-double full-full to give the U.S. a decent lead heading into the third jump.

Li Tianma adjusted his own jump to five twists to try to put China back in contention for gold; however, he wasn’t able to stomp down the landing and fell head over heels, losing both skis in the process. It all came down to Lillis, who nailed a double full-full-full and sealed the win for the U.S.

The Swiss team came into this event flying somewhat under the radar. Pirmin Werner (SUI), one of three men who attempted the Hurricane on Friday, stomped down a double full-full-double full for 123 points while Noe Roth laid out a clean trick with five twists for 129.54 points, two massive scores that vaulted them over the Chinese.
