Kos is entered in both the 200 backstroke and 200 IM on the final day after only racing one individual event so far this meet, the 100 backstroke. He earned the gold medal, swimming a new pool record time of 43.87.
He will be the top seed in the 200 backstroke, and the 2nd seed in the 200 IM (jumped from 3rd due to teammate Will Modglin‘s scratch”, and the only event between the two races in the morning will be the 100 freestyles.
This isn’t the only time Kos will have to make the decision between the 200 IM and 200 back, since he will have the same conflict next month at NCAAs, so he is likely trying to determine if the double is a feasible option, though NCAAs will not have women’s events in between.
Kos will also battle this conflict internationally in the coming years, especially with the 2028 Olympic schedule putting the two event prelims on the same day, which means Kos would have to race the two events in prelims/semis/and finals.
Texas teammate Will Modglin was the highest seeded scratch of the day. He was entered in both the 200 IM and the 200 back, coming in as the 2nd seed in both. He opted for the 200 backstroke over the 200 IM, leaving Kos to take his place as the 2nd seed in the event.
Modglin has already swum two events this meet, finishing 2nd in the 100 back and 8th in the 100 fly.
