Video shows skier Nick Goeppers terrifying halfpipe crash at Winter Olympics

Nick Goepper gave those watching the men’s freeski halfpipe quite a scare Friday when he nailed the lip of the halfpipe, bringing what could have been a gold medal-winning run to a crashing and terrifying end.

But by some miracle, he managed to walk away from it all.

The 31-year-old Goepper, who switched to halfpipe for this Olympic cycle after winning two silvers and a bronze in slopestyle in the previous three Games, was sitting in bronze medal position heading into his third and final run of the final event.

And he was going big for gold when, in his final trick, he smashed into the deck and came crashing into the middle of the halfpipe course, the crowd quickly falling silent.

Medics quickly rushed to the scene, but within a few moments, Goepper was walking away and appeared to be largely unhurt. He later gave fans watching two thumbs up.

“That would have been maybe the hardest halfpipe trick ever landed in competition,” commentators said as they watched a replay of the frightening moment, noting that Goepper missed “the pop” and come down on the edge of the halfpipe “ready to land.” “No one else in the world capable of doing that or even trying that.”

It would have been a “gold medal run,” they said.

As the final skier came down the pipe, Goepper was narrowly knocked off the podium, just missing his shot at a medal.

“Wow,” he was heard saying at the bottom of the hill. “Round five in four years.”

Goepper, who went viral earlier in the Games for training in jeans, had entered the final for the men’s halfpipe event among the top finishers.

His fall came just hours after another horrifying crash from one of the top competitors in the event, 19-year-old Finley Melville Ives out of New Zealand. Ives was going big for his second run in the qualifications when he landed hard and had to be stretchered out of the halfpipe. The harrowing moment halted the competition for several minutes and left Ives’ teammates in tears as they watched on.

Commentators said Ives was conscious and with his family as the event resumed competition.

Goepper, who is from Indiana, had recently returned to elite competition after a brief retirement.

He has spoken about the challenges he faced earlier in his career, including legal trouble and time in rehab and said the process of rebuilding himself has shaped how he approaches the sport now. Goepper has adopted the nickname “Ski Unc,” which he described to NBC as part of embracing a more authentic version of himself as he reenters competition.

And he does it all while acknowledging his Midwest roots — and apparently wearing jeans.

“It was a statement to allude to my Midwest roots of like, hey, anybody can do this sport,” Goepper said. “Hey, I’m skiing in jeans and I’m skiing in the biggest events in the entire world, and you can do it, too.”
