The arrival of Spring Training games today means we’ll also soon get some updated looks at Cubs prospects. No, there’s not a whole lot you can glean from spring games, even for prospects, but sometimes you do see hints of development.
Other Cubs prospect bits …
Cubs top pitching prospect Jaxon Wiggins, in his first big-league camp, isn't looking too far ahead to achieving his MLB dream. He knows throwing more strikes is important to making that happen."I’d love to see him force his way into that conversation.” www.chicagotribune.com/2026/02/18/c…
— Meghan Montemurro (@mmontemurro.bsky.social) 2026-02-19T17:20:31.028Z The dream, obviously, is that Wiggins dominates so thoroughly at Iowa over the first month or two that the Cubs decide they must figure out a way to incorporate him in the big league rotation, a la Cade Horton’s 2025 season. But it’s important to keep in mind that, even if Wiggins stays at Iowa all year and simply takes developmental steps forward, it can be a successful year. We’re eager to see him in the big leagues because the potential is sky high, but development is not linear and all that. (Also: don’t sleep on the possibility that Wiggins starts at Iowa for 2/3 of a season, and then comes up as a reliever for the stretch run for the Cubs as a way to limit his usage and also take advantage of his premium stuff. If that were to happen, you could still assume he’ll be back to starting in 2027.) The hopes were high for Eli Lovich in 2025 after he was an overslot signing out of the 2024 draft, but, while he did reach Low-A, the performance at Myrtle Beach wasn’t quite a breakout. Hopefully that comes this year at South Bend for the 20-year-old outfielder:Cubs prospect Eli Lovich has the potential to rocket up the top prospects list ? — Baseball America (@BaseballAmerica) February 9, 2026 Lovich was one of 10 prospects to know on that BA list (outside the Cubs’ top 30), including pitchability lefty Ethan Flanagan: “The Cubs selected Flanagan in the 17th round of the 2023 draft out of UCLA. Flanagan had his second Tommy John surgery following that draft, having undergone the operation previously in high school. Due to this, Flanagan finally made his professional debut in 2025. He made 12 starts for Low-A Myrtle Beach after a stint in the Arizona Complex League. Flanagan shows advanced pitchability and strike-throwing. He mixes an 89-91 mph fastball, a low-80s changeup, a low-to-mid-70s curveball and a low-to-mid-80s slider. It’s below-average stuff, but Flanagan shows the ability to throw strikes and get outs.” Dan Szymborski has ZiPS generate a top prospects list each year, which comes solely from stats, age, level, and performance comps. It’s an interesting way to see where there are differences between a traditional scouting approach and a more analytical model, but you probably won’t love it this year if you’re a Cubs fan. Moises Ballesteros comes in at number 35, and then there’s not another Cubs prospect in the top-100. Not sure where the other big name guys fall, because Szymborski only thereafter showed some of the rankings at individual positional spots. There, you see Pedro Ramirez as the 6th best third base prospect (not necessarily a surprise, given his age/level/production), and Jonathon Long as the 10th best first base prospect. That’s it for Cubs mentions. (Note one huge outlier, which is funny because I just talked about how he was underrated the other day: Reds infield prospect Sal Stewart is a top-50-ish guy on most lists, but ZiPS has him all the way up at number 7.) A trio of Cubs draft picks from 2025 were working out with Trevor Bauer:Cubs 2025 first rounder Ethan Conrad faced Trevor Bauer in live ABs on Bauer’s YouTube channel. He had a couple really impressive swings. pic.twitter.com/pxlJnCZWYM

— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) February 14, 2026 Greg Huss updated his top-30 Cubs prospects list:Cubs pitchers and catchers report one week from today, so right now seems like an ideal time to update my top prospect list, going 30 names deep (plus a few honorable mentions) ⬇️outofthevines.com/2026/02/04/t…
— Greg Huss (@outofthevines.bsky.social) 2026-02-04T14:57:52.280Z It will definitely be fun to see this guy in action in 2026, because the potential is enormous for Pierce Coppola, but the performance and injury risks are about as high as it gets:The Cubs selected Pierce Coppola in the 7th-round last season and he has an intriguing profile.A 6-foot-8 lefty with serious strikeout stuff. He posted a 15.5 K/9 in college, though health was an issue. After the draft, he threw 8 innings in Single-A, posting a 2.25 ERA with… pic.twitter.com/1GPqp4Xlnv
