Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur is keeping his cards close to the vest when it comes to the quarterback situation and whether Kyler Murray is still part of the franchise’s plans.
Speaking on Wednesday, LaFleur said there’s currently “no time frame” on a Murray decision — even if the optics show a clear direction toward getting him off the roster this offseason.
The position is far from the only one that needs evaluated for a franchise coming off a 3-14 mark with a new lead man in charge, though.
“It is the most important position in all of sport. Let’s be real right here, there’s no harder position to play in this league than the quarterback,” he told Bickley & Marotta on Friday. “But like every other position, especially being in the first year, (general manager Monti Ossenfort) and the crew, we’re talking about everybody. We’re talking about this entire roster, all 90. And when I say all 90, I mean all 90.
“Like who’s good enough to make the 53? Who’s good enough to be a reliable backup? Who’s good enough to be a starter? Who do we got to bring in from a free agency perspective? What’s the projection on what some of these guys are going to get paid? What is their health history? And then you got the draft and all the things that happen within the draft. I’ll be taking off to (the NFL Draft Combine) with Monti on Monday. Our whole staff will be there. It’ll be great to get there and start to get to know those guys. But like I just said, every single position is important and we’ll be talking about all of them.”
Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur understands the importance of the quarterback position amid the unknown surrounding Kyler Murray's future.
He also knows there's much more to building out a roster than just at QB.

There’s no denying Murray is the biggest domino remaining this offseason for the Cardinals following the firing of former head coach Jonathan Gannon.
All signs point to Murray playing elsewhere in 2026 after seven years and one playoff appearance as Arizona’s franchise guy. His career started off strong but has since fizzled out as injuries and inconsistency have hampered the 2019 No. 1 overall pick.

The bigger question centers around how Arizona gets Murray off the roster.
Trading the quarterback would be the best possible avenue for the franchise, regardless of what the team gets back in return. For Arizona, it’s about limiting the dead cap hit as much as possible.
Already guaranteed $36.8 million for this upcoming season, cutting Murray outright with a pre-June 1 designation would bring with it a $54.7 million dead money hit. A post-June 1 designation would be a $47.5 million dead money hit but can be spread out across two seasons, according to OverTheCap.
A pre-June trade, however, would only bring about $17.9 million in dead money while freeing up $34.7 million in cap space. A trade with a post-June designation would result in $10.7 million in dead money and $41.9 million in cap savings.
Either way, the Cardinals need an answer to the Murray question sooner rather than later, as another $19.5 million becomes guaranteed for the signal caller in 2027 if he’s on the roster on the fifth day of the new league year (March 15).
Time is ticking.
And that’s just the quarterback spot.
Arizona’s offensive line took a major step back in 2025 and is in desperate need of an influx in talent. Paris Johnson Jr. and Hjalte Froholdt appear set to continue their roles at left tackle and center, respectively.
Beyond that, things get murky. It’s not just the players, either. After a rough first year on the job filling in for the departed Klayton Adams, offensive line coach Justin Frye was brought back under LaFleur and new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. The microscope is going to be on him and the unit from the jump.
Running back also stands out as a big unknown given both James Conner and Trey Benson are coming off season-ending injuries.
As for the pass catchers, can Marvin Harrison Jr. bounce back after two inconsistent seasons, highlighted by a 2025 that included missed time due to injury? Can the team continue to get the best out of Michael Wilson following his explosive last year?
Defensively, the Cardinals are going to need added depth along the defensive line and secondary as both Walter Nolen III and Garrett Williams recover from their season-ending injuries.
More pressure up front is needed, especially with Calais Campbell — one of Arizona’s best defensive assets last year — an impending free agent and with retirement a real possibility.
Josh Sweat proved to be worth the price tag, but who is going to step up opposite of the pass rusher? Is that player even on the roster at this point?
And that’s just scratching the surface.
