GENEVA, N.Y. — Federal immigration agents arrested three people after a traffic stop in Geneva on Friday morning, the Geneva Police Department says.
Geneva Police Chief Ronald Eveland said he’s looking to clarify his department’s response to the traffic stop involving ICE. He said officers responded because the suspect’s car hit an ICE patrol car, but officers did not help with the arrests.
Police responded to Pulteney and Milton streets around 7:15 a.m. after getting a report of a damaged ICE patrol car. At the scene, officers helped with completing a crash report and towing the suspect’s car away. Eveland said the officers weren’t involved with any “apprehension, detention, or questioning of individuals.”
After that, ICE went to the Geneva Public Safety Building to wait for an exchange slip for the crash report. Eveland said the building wasn’t used to hold or interrogate the people who ICE arrested.
Eveland said members of the public have contacted his office with concerns after seeing ICE using the parking lot of the public safety building. He provided this statement:
“Our parking lot is a public space and I will not restrict the use of the public lot by any federal law enforcement agency. There were also reports that ICE agents were entering the Public Safety Building. This was done to utilize the public restrooms, which I am also not going to restrict.”
Does ICE need to notify local police of its operations?
According to Eveland, Geneva Police didn’t know that ICE was conducting an investigation that morning. He said that, although it’s often a courtesy for an outside agency to let local police know of their operations, it isn’t required by law.
