Mendocino Coast State Park MPA (Marine Protected Area) Interpreter Kenzi Lamb recently won the Interpretive Excellence Innovation Award at the 2nd annual California State Parks Interpretation and Education Awards. Park Interpreters are guides, storytellers, and educators who connect visitors to the rich natural and cultural resources of our parks.
Lamb won the prestigious award for her development of a “Tidepool Heroes” video that prepares students in advance of tide pooling, ensuring a safe, respectful, and meaningful exploration.
“We couldn’t be prouder of Kenzi, and she definitely deserves this award,” says Michelle Levesque, Sonoma-Mendocino Coast District Interpreter II. “Her work is profoundly important as it connects students to the natural world and educates them on the importance of safe and respectful interactions with the tidepools.”
Tidepool field trips in the Russian River Sector of the Sonoma–Mendocino Coast District have long been led by Volunteer docents without a uniformed interpreter’s assistance to relate important safety messaging. Training, scheduling, and logistical support are provided by park co-manager Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, with only occasional in-person training from MPA Interpreters. According to staff, Lamb recognized both the opportunity and the need to strengthen this collaborative model by providing a shared, accessible interpretive tool that could reach students in advance of their arrival on the rocky shore so that they are better equipped to experience the tidepools safely.
Her video addresses tidepool safety and etiquette in a highly engaging, age- appropriate, and thematic format. The video clearly demonstrates that protecting yourself, your classmates, and tidepool creatures is essential to enjoying this fragile habitat and supports California State Parks’ core values of reinforcing best practices in protecting our natural resources.
