Journalist Argues Team USA Should Vet Olympians About Their ‘Patriotism’

The daughter of Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy wants Team USA athletes to be vetted for their patriotism before competing in the Olympics.

Evita Duffy-Alfonso, an independent journalist, proposed the idea in a Wednesday, February 18, appearance on Newsmax’s Carl Higbie Frontline, where she discussed figure skater Amber Glenn, who has been openly critical of President Donald Trump.

“I don’t know why we don’t start vetting these Olympians before they actually start to represent us overseas for their patriotism,” Duffy-Alfonso opined, before citing her colleague at The Federalist, Shawn Fleetwood.

In Duffy-Alfonso’s words, Fleetwood suggested that “the patriotic thing to do is actually to root against these unpatriotic Olympians because they’re going out bashing us. Why should we cheer for them? Why should we want them to win? It’s absurd.”

Higbie, 42, also weighed in, setting Duffy-Alfonso up by saying, “[Glenn] was a three-time reigning champ and was expected to at least win a medal. She flopped, got 13th place. So I’m thinking to myself, maybe she should focus on what she came [to the Olympics] for rather than political bashing of the Trump administration.”

As video of the segment made its way around social media, Duffy-Alfonso quickly came under fire for her suggestion. She has since doubled-down via X.

“Want me to say it again?” she wrote to one critic. “Athletes who hate America shouldn’t be sent overseas to represent America. And while we’re on the subject, they can give back the Ralph Lauren gear too.”

An outspoken supporter of the Trump administration, Duffy-Alfonso is married to Michael Alfonso, a Trump-endorsed candidate for congress in Wisconsin who pledged to be a “steadfast MAGA warrior.”

Her criticism of Glenn, 26, comes after the Team USA athlete opened up in a press conference before the 2026 Winter Olympics about her identity as a queer woman amid the current administration.

“It’s been a hard time for the [LGBTQ] community overall in this administration,” she said. “It isn’t the first time that we’ve had to come together as a community and try and fight for our human rights. And now especially, it’s not just affecting the queer community, but many other communities, and I think that we are able to support each other in a way that we didn’t have to before, and because of that, it’s made us a lot stronger.”

She continued, “I hope I can use my platform and my voice throughout these Games to try and encourage people to stay strong in these hard times. I know that a lot of people say you’re just an athlete, like, stick to your job, shut up about politics, but politics affect us all. It is something that I will not just be quiet about because it is something that affects us in our everyday lives. So of course, there are things that I disagree with, but as a community, we are strong and we support each other, and brighter days are ahead of us.”

Glenn, who identifies as bisexual and pansexual, later said she needed to take a step back from social media due to the backlash her comments received.

“When I chose to utilize one of the amazing things about the United States of America (Freedom of speech) to convey how I feel as an athlete competing for Team USA in a troubling time for many Americans I am now receiving a scary amount of hate/threats for simply using my voice WHEN ASKED about how I feel,” she explained via her Instagram Story earlier this month.
