What Would a Tyson Bagent Trade Even Look Like?

An Arizona-based reporter shared buzz that the Cardinals are “intrigued” by Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. With Chicago’s football team set at quarterback with Caleb Williams and Arizona’s future at the position being unsettled because of Kyler Murray’s shortcomings, it makes sense for the Cardinals to inquire about possibly trading for the Bears’ QB2.

As for what a Tyson Bagent trade could look like, I’ve done some research and unearthed some recent quarterback trades in hopes of getting a better idea.

A look at some potential Tyson Bagent trade comps

Finding a suitable comparison for a potential Tyson Bagent trade wasn’t easy. The truth is that Bagent is relatively inexperienced and doesn’t have a premium prospect pedigree. But he went 2-2 as a starter as a rookie in 2023, has a friendly contract, and just spent a year learning under Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. Factor in some quality preseason film (to whatever extent you’d like) and you’ve got a worthwhile trade chip on your hands.

Will the Bears cash it in this offseason? They might. And if they do, perhaps one of the trades below will serve as a guideline for what Chicago could expect if it trades Tyson Bagent.

March 2024: Patriots trade Mac Jones to the Jaguars for a conditional sixth-round pick — This trade kicked off that offseason’s quarterback carousel. At the time, I didn’t love what it meant for Justin Fields’ trade market because I feared it would drive down the potential asking price for Fields from other teams. As it turns out, I was on the ball on that one. Perhaps the Bears could set the market for a quarterback trade with a Tyson Bagent deal. Ideally, they will get more than a conditional sixth-round pick. March 2024: Commanders trade Sam Howell, a fourth-round pick (No. 102 overall), and a sixth-rounder (No. 179) to the Seahawks for a third-round pick (No. 78) and a fifth-round pick (No. 152) —  Now, this is my kind of trade. This was an ambitious swap of picks that also involves a quarterback. I’m not sure how the Bears can pull off something similar, but the idea of trading Tyson Bagent and two Day 3 picks to somehow land an extra top-80 pick on Day 2 is something that could be worth it to Chicago’s front office.

March 2024: Steelers trade Kenny Pickett and a fourth-round pick (No. 120) to the Eagles for a 2024 third-round pick (No. 98) and two 2025 seventh-round picks —  In the write-up at ESPN, Brooke Pryor writes the swap was similar in value to what the Commanders received from the Seahawks in the aforementioned Howell trade. If the Bears can get multiple picks in multiple drafts for Tyson Bagent, I think a trade is something this front office should entertain. August 2024: Titans trade Malik Willis to the Packers for a seventh-round pick — Sheesh! The Titans selling low on a developmental quarterback prospect who was set to start the 2024 season behind Will Levis and Mason Rudolph (neither of whom is even on the team anymore) provides a real snapshot as to why Tennessee is in the mess it is in right now. Kudos to Green Bay for developing Willis into a useful backup quarterback who can make a strong claim to be worthy of a starting role. © Albert Cesare/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images April 2025: Seahawks trade Sam Howell and a fifth-round pick (No. 172 overall) to the Vikings for a fifth-round pick (No. 142) — This trade got lost in the shuffle on NFL Draft weekend, but it still caught my eye when it happened. The Seahawks trading Sam Howell as part of a pick swap that upgraded their pick by 30 spots seems pretty nifty. October 2025: Browns trade Joe Flacco and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Bengals for a fifth-round pick — In search of a bridge quarterback to get them through while Joe Burrow was down with an injury, Cleveland and Cincinnati engineered a rare intradivisional trade between AFC North rivals. I feel like the Bengals got a steal here by getting Flacco (who wasn’t awful in a pinch) and a 2026 sixth-round pick at the cost of sending the Browns a fifth-rounder.

In the end, I feel as if the Bears would do well by trading Tyson Bagent sooner rather than later. Not only would it be opportunistic to get something of value in a trade that could help this team win, but it would also allow Bagent to go out, win a starting job, and prove himself to the league. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to push Bagent out the door. But this could be a win-win for everyone if the price is right on a potential trade.
