Spring-like warmth in the Chicago area will soon come to an end as severe weather chances and temperatures in the 30s come creeping back into the forecast.
“”One more mild day before temperatures fall,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, early Thursday morning. “After today, temperatures turning a lot cooler.”
Thursday morning started out chilly, Roman said, with scattered sprinkles for some and temperatures in the upper 30s. Later in the afternoon, a wide range of temperatures was expected, from the 40s to the north and near the lake, to the 50s further inland and near 60s to the south.
Thursday afternoon would also bring chances for strong to severe storms, Roman said, with the primary threats being hail and gusty winds.
Scattered storms were expected to start developing around 11 a.m., Roman’s timeline showed. By about 2 p.m., the storms would become more widespread, with more showers lasting through the evening.
According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, parts of the Chicago area Thursday afternoon will be under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five.
“That means any storm that does develop could be on the stronger side,” Roman said. Roman added that the strongest storms are likely to stay downstate.
Still, in the afternoon and evening, one or two of the storms in the Chicago area could be strong, with winds gusting as high as 60 miles-per-hour and quarter-sized hail, the National Weather Service warned.
“Heavy downpours could be possible as well,” Roman said.
After that, the colder air moves in, Roman said, with rain transitioning to snow showers overnight.
“We could see some snow showers for the morning commute,” Roman said, though the system would quickly move out.
Temperatures Friday were expected to dip down into the low 40s, with temperatures staying in the low 40s Saturday. Sunday and Monday would be even colder, Roman said, dropping into the 30s before moving back into the 40s through the rest of the work week.
