UA alum travels to campus in 27-foot-long wiener

Oscar Mayer’s iconic Wienermobile returned to campus once again this week, with UA alum Gabby Fulkerson, or “Grill ‘Em Up Gabby” as a Hotdogger.

A Hotdogger is the official term for the brand specialist and spokespeople for the Oscar Mayer company.

Fulkerson graduated from the University last May with a bachelor’s degree in public relations. Since then, she has traveled thousands of miles across the country as a spokesperson, representing the Wienermobile both in the media and at events.

The vehicle acts as a “PR firm on wheels” for Oscar Mayer and selects only a handful of people to spread “miles of smiles” each year. Currently, there are 12 Hotdoggers nationwide who have had the chance to relish in the coveted year-long tour.

Carl G. Mayer, the nephew of Oscar Mayer, first came up with the idea for the Wienermobile — which spans 27 feet, or 60 hot dogs long —  in 1936. Now, over 90 years later, more than 400 recent college graduates have served as Hotdoggers since the vehicle first hit the road.

Isaac Salas, formally known as “At the Grill Isaac,” serves as Fulkerson’s co-pilot and graduated from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley last May. Salas’ dreams of becoming a Hotdogger first began his sophomore year of college when the Wienermobile visited his own campus.

“I got hooked on the idea of wanting to explore the country from a 27-foot-long hot dog,” Salas said. “Now I’m a lucky dog who gets to drive the Wienermobile.”

The Wienermobile makes stops at weddings, colleges, farmers markets and other lifestyle events.

“We could have people who have never seen a Wienermobile before, and they’ve been wanting to see it for 30 years, and it’s such an emotional experience for them,” Fulkerson said.

One of Salas’ favorite memories from his travels was when he got to witness a bride and groom do their first look, and then inviting them to see the Wienermobile.

“That was buns of fun to be able to do,” Salas said.

The job runs for one year, starting on June 1, and ending 365 days later on the Hotdogger’s “expiration date.”

For aspiring Hotdoggers, Oscar Mayer will host an info session on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the UA Student Center Career Center in room 3400.

“If this is something you feel called to do, there’s probably a reason why,” Fulkerson said. “Be your true self and have fun with it.”
