A team of good Samaritans helped rescue a baby from Chicago’s Belmont Harbor on Wednesday afternoon after strong gust of wind blew the baby’s stroller into the water.
Louis Kapost told NBC Chicago about the moment he saw the baby and the entire stroller go tumbling into the water, and the rescue mission that unfolded afterwards.
He saw a woman with the stroller near the water, he said. As she looked away for just a brief moment, the “wind just picked up and the stroller just blew right into the lake,” Kapost said.
“Thank god the stroller floated,” Kapost said. “It held on long enough” for a young boy named Leo to jump in after the baby.
Kapost said, with Leo’s help, the baby was “floating and face up.”
“He was okay, he was not thrilled about it but he was never underwater,” Kapost said.
The rescue was a “great team effort,” Kapost said.
He said he used his jacket as a lifeline for the child and other witnesses tossed in a life ring that was nearby and called 911.
“Took a bunch of us to get the kid out,” Kapost said. “Luckily, he’s okay. It’s a good thing the life ring was there.”
One bystander and the baby were transported from the scene, the Chicago Fire Department said.
A wind advisory was in effect for the Chicago area Wednesday through 6 p.m. as gusts of roughly 40 miles per hour were expected to blow through the area.
Wednesday’s incident is not the first time a baby has been blown into the water in the Windy City. A 2-year-old was nearly killed in April 2008 after high winds blew him into Lake Michigan.
