Charlie Davis may have finished in second place during his first season of Survivor, but this time around, he’s planning to play a very different game.
In an exclusive interview with Parade ahead of Survivor 50, the lawyer opened up about how he plans to change his approach from Survivor 46.
Davis, who is widely considered by fans to be the most “robbed” runner-up of the New Era, said one key lesson he learned the first time around was not to downplay parts of his game at Final Tribal Council—if he makes it that far again—in an effort to avoid coming off as cocky to the jury.
"Huge lesson learned in that you can’t leave so much work for Final Tribal Council," Davis said. "You’ve got to give something beforehand, something to let people ruminate on and think about and get you in their heads and in their mouths to the other jurors in a good way before Final Tribal. Because, listen, as much as all the jurors are like, 'My mind is totally not made up. I could vote for anyone tonight.' That’s bulls—t. That is such bulls—t. Yes, you can change people’s minds at Final Tribal, but people have an idea of who they’re going to vote for when they come in. You have to do a little work for yourself before you get there."

On the contrary, losing Survivor 46—with his number one ally Maria Shrime Gonzalez not voting for him in the end—hasn't scared Davis off from playing in a duo again.
"Well, here’s the thing, I like to play with a strong duo. I like a strong alliance partner. I think that’s what I’m going to gravitate towards again. I think everyone likes that; who doesn’t like to have a number one ally?" Davis said.
"It’s nice to have someone who you can trust wholeheartedly," he continued. "You think it becomes a lot harder in a returnee season where you might end up on a starting tribe with someone and have a great connection. And all of a sudden. you merge, and then they get someone who they’ve known for decades next to them. It’s like, are you their number one anymore? Maybe not. So it is tricky. But I don’t know how else to play. You always figure something out. But I really want to play with a tight alliance again. And just hope it doesn’t go terribly wrong."
