ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County resumed naturalization ceremonies, allowing a group of people to officially become American citizens on Tuesday after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
This development came as a surprise since U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) had previously instructed Monroe and other upstate New York counties to halt these ceremonies in November.
“We are honored to welcome our newest citizens and celebrate this milestone alongside their families and loved ones,” said Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo in a press release.
A spokesperson from USCIS had told News10NBC in November that the counties did not meet the statutory requirements to conduct the ceremonies.
