Emma HemingWillis has spent the past several years acting as a caregiver for her husband Bruce Willis—but she makes sure that she's taking care of her own mental health too.
Following Willis' diagnosis with frontotemporal dementia in early 2023, Heming has been open about their journey as a family as they've experienced such a life-changing event. In a new interview with People published on Tuesday (Feb. 17), Heming reflected on how she's caring for both her husband and herself.
"I think that 40% of caregivers aren't making their own medical appointments and caregivers can sometimes pass before their loved ones," Heming told the outlet.

She continued, "So that’s a reminder to keep me on track and hopefully educate people, caregiver or not, just about the importance of caring for yourself. It's really vital."
For Heming, that's means making time to check in with herself and working to balance her family's schedule with doctor's appointments as well as personal time.
“It's really easy to get bogged down with our to-do lists and our calendars. I try to have a ‘brain break’ on my calendar," Heming said. "So I remember to step away from the screen, getting outside, making sure that I am checking the boxes on my brain health journey because that's sort of how I care for myself now."
Heming added that by thinking about her brain first, the rest of her "body benefits." That's also part of the reason why Heming launched her women's brain health brand, Make Time Wellness, which produces supplements that focus on issues like brain fog, low energy and skin concerns.
“I think as women in society, we tend to put ourselves last, and we put everyone's needs above our own," Heming said. "And what I've realized is that if you are not caring for yourself, if you are not finding ways to make time for your health, your hobbies, it's impossible to be able to care for the people that we love."
