Charlotte Catholic Girls, East Chapel Hill Boys Snap Title Droughts at NCHSAA 6A State Meet

It was a return to the top for both the Charlotte Catholic girls’ team and the East Chapel Hills boys’ squad at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 6A State Championships. It just happened to be a much longer wait for the East Chapel Hill boys.

    While Charlotte Catholic won its first title in five years on the girls’ side, the East Chapel Hill boys won their first crown in 21 years.

    Girls’ Recap

    Charlotte Catholic won on the strength of its relays, winning the 200 free and 400 free relay events.

    In the 200 free relay, the team of Kathryn Kern (24.00), Ellie Druhan (24.91), Olivia Jacobsen (25.07) and Madi Hertzig (23.66) won in a time of 1:37.64.

    The 400 free relay was later won by Charlotte Catholic’s team of  CJ Bernado (52.82), Caroline Meehan (53.25), Jacobsen (54.02) and Hertzig (51.37) in 3:31.46.

    The 200 medley relay was won by the Junius Rose squad of Clara Pierce Smith (29.41), Hadleigh Kulas (28.50), Iris Eldridge (27.56) and Riley Brown (24.64) in 1:50.12.

    Individually, East Chapel Hill senior Isabel Wolk was the only multi-event winner.

    Committed to Cal, Wolk won the 200 free in 1:48.00 and then the 500 free in a personal best time of 4:54.58.

    Other individual event winners were:

    Peyton James, a sophomore from East Chapel Hill, won the 200 IM in a personal best 2:03.75. Kern, a senior at Charlotte Catholic, swam a personal best 23.57 to take the 50 free. Charlotte Catholic junior Reagan Leckner captured diving with 469.60 points. Hertzig, a junior for Charlotte Catholic, finished 1st in the 100 fly with a personal best time of 55.30. In the 100 free, Bernardo, a senior atCharlotte Catholic, won in a time of 51.66. Asheville senior Delaney Schwab, a Brown commit, captured the 100 back in 56.53. Kulas, a senior who has committed to George Mason, swam a personal best time of 1:01.35 to win the 100 breast.

    Girls Team Standings — Top 5

    Charlotte Catholic, 394 East Chapel Hill, 266 Mount Tabor, 264 Junius Rose, 184 Watauga, 181

    Boys’ Recap

    East Chapel Hill returned to the top thanks largely to the performance of junior Colt Chaires, who won two individual events and was a part of two of the team’s three winning relay teams.

    Committed to Ohio State, Chaires first won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:50.04. He later swam a personal best 4:26.33 to win the 500 free.

    In the 200 free relay, the squad of Max Halpern (21.33), Chaires (21.36), Alex Nelson (20.72) and Max Wolk (20.74) won in a time of 1:24.15.

    The 400 free relay was won by the East Chapel Hill team of John Zhang (46.05), Chaires (46.44), Chuanxi William Zhang (48.37) and Halpern (46.39) in 3:07.25.

    East Chapel Hill also won the 200 medley relay behind the team of Zhang (23.20), Wolk (25.96), Cody Sha (23.58) and Nelson (20.40) in 1:33.14.

    The other multi-event winner was Saint Stephens junior Logan Kelly, who won the 50 free in 20.72 and the 100 free in 45.71. Both were personal best times.

    Other individual event winners were:

    Halpern, a junior, won the 200 free in 1:40.70. Northern Guilford senior Jacob Pollina won the diving event with 527.60 points. Nelson, a senior at East Chapel Hill, swam a personal best 49.50 to win the 100 fly. Zhang, a senior at East Chapel Hill, won the 100 back in a personal best of 49.79. Oliver Marrujo, a sophomore for Felton Grove, topped the field in the 100 breast with a time of 56.94.
