Melting snow causes partial roof collapse in Albion, displacing 17 people

ALBION, N.Y. — The melting snow is being blamed for a partially collapsed roof that left 17 people without a home Tuesday morning.

Albion firefighters responded to the apartment building around 6:30 a.m.

Village Code Enforcement Officer Christopher Kinter said one of the roof’s main beams collapsed due to water leakage that rotted the wood over time. He explained that the snow melt over the past few days worsened the situation.

“It fell straight down so it didn’t pull–doesn’t look like it pulled from the walls, which is good. But just as a safety precaution we’re going to close off this whole section of Bank Street until further notice,” said Kinter.

Responders shut off all utilities, including electric, gas, and water, upon arrival. All residents had to evacuate, and the business was closed for the day.

Christian Ludwig, a resident of the apartment, described the moment he learned about the collapse.

“I woke up to ‘Hey the other side of the apartment collapsed, and we might have to leave.’ I’m annoyed, but there’s nothing I can do. Just be patient. It doesn’t make any use–doesn’t help anybody being upset about this,” Ludwig said.

The Full Gospel Tabernacle Church, located on the first floor, suffered water damage. Ernest Walker, the senior pastor who runs the sister church in Rochester, expressed relief that no one was hurt.

“Our primary concern was that everybody was okay, nobody got hurt. And then so now we’re over here doing some damage assessment and seeing what we have to do,” said Walker.

Firefighters assisted Walker and church members in moving equipment and furniture out of the church.

“It’s the beginning of the year, we can plan, plan, plan, but we always have to be prepared for the unexpected. And this is totally unexpected,” said Walker.

Kinter said they are waiting for structural engineers and insurance adjusters to assess the building before utilities can be restored and residents can return. There is currently no timeline for when this will happen.

Firefighters confirmed that no injuries resulted from the collapse. Only businesses along Bank Street connected to the building are closed, while those along Main Street remain open.
