The defending champions battled back from two down on Tuesday. Re-live their comeback with the best facts and Opta data in our Monaco vs PSG stats page.
Paris Saint-Germain showed the mettle of champions as they fought back from 2-0 down to beat Monaco 2-3 and move a step closer to the last 16 of the 2025-26 Champions League, largely thanks to Désiré Doué.
The defending champions were on the ropes during the early exchanges at Stade Louis II, finding themselves trailing to a brace from Folarin Balogun, whose opener – scored after 55 seconds – was the earliest goal PSG have ever conceded in the UCL.
PSG then suffered the blow of losing Ousmane Dembélé to injury in the 25th minute, only for his replacement – Doué – to play a vital role in getting PSG back on level terms.
Their fightback wasn’t entirely smooth, with Vitinha seeing a penalty saved by Philipp Köhn at 2-0, but the vast majority of the game was one-way traffic.
That was only aided by the sending off of Aleksandr Golovin, before Doué completed the turnaround with his second goal of the game.
It means Monaco must now win at the Parc des Princes next week if they are to progress to the last 16.
Monaco stunned PSG by racing into an early lead when Balogun nodded in Aleksandr Golovin’s teasing cross from close range inside the first minute.
Despite PSG’s dominance in response, Monaco made it 2-0 in the 18th minute as Balogun raced beyond the visitors’ defence and swept home a clinical finish.
Their lead should have been halved a few moments later, Wout Faes clumsily bringing down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the penalty area after being caught in possession.
But Köhn produced a wonderful save to deny Vitinha’s spot-kick, preserving Monaco’s two-goal lead.
PSG did pull one back in the 29th minute, though; Doué drilling home left-footed just one minute and 59 seconds after replacing the injured Dembélé.
The equaliser then arrived just before half-time.
Doué was involved again, Achraf Hakimi finishing after his teammate’s prior shot was parried out to him.
Any hope Monaco had of restoring their lead suffered a major blow just after the restart when Golovin – sent off in Monaco’s last league game – was shown a straight red card for catching Hakimi on the shin.
It took PSG a while to make the most of their numerical advantage, but unsurprisingly Doué was at the centre of things once again.
PSG attacked at pace, linked up quickly and then Warren Zaïre-Emery teed up Doué just inside the box, the France international finishing with aplomb.
That made him just the second PSG player to score at least two goals as a substitute in a Champions League game after Kylian Mbappé (hat-trick vs Club Brugge, October 2019).
The visitors might have increased their lead nine minutes from time, only for Köhn to just about keep Bradley Barcola’s effort from going in.
Either way, there was never any real danger of Monaco punishing that miss, as PSG cruised to victory.
