ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After weeks of persistent winter storms across Western New York, it may be time to “share the wealth.” The focus now shifts to the West Coast, where California is experiencing a powerful and impactful stretch of weather.
A series of Pacific storm systems is delivering heavy precipitation to much of the state, particularly across central and southern California. Over the next several days, repeated rounds of rain and mountain snow will significantly affect travel and infrastructure.
In the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada, snowfall will be especially intense. Above 6,000 to 7,000 feet, colder air will support substantial snow accumulation, with some areas potentially receiving up to 60 inches — or five feet — of snow. Whiteout conditions and chain controls are likely in the mountain passes, creating hazardous travel.
At lower elevations, the primary concern shifts to heavy rainfall. Many areas could receive four to eight inches of rain, increasing the risk of flooding. Flood watches and warnings have already been issued in some locations. In addition, the threat of mudslides will be elevated, particularly in burn scar areas left vulnerable by recent wildfires. Saturated soils in these regions are more prone to debris flows, which can lead to road closures and localized damage.
The active pattern is expected to persist as additional storms move inland from the Pacific, prolonging the risk of both heavy snow in the mountains and flooding at lower elevations.
And while California bears the brunt of this unsettled weather now, patterns like this often evolve. It may only be a matter of time before more active conditions once again return to Western New York.
