Third police force probes Andrew’s Epstein links – as MPs threaten to summon him

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is facing a third police review into allegations about his relationship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Essex Police is the third UK force to examine claims made about the former prince, after Surrey Police and Thames Valley Police began assessing information linked to the release of the Epstein files.

The force is examining flight logs and emails for Epstein’s so-called Lolita Express in and out of Stansted Airport’s private terminal, according to The Sun.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown last week said that he had been told privately that previous investigations related to Andrew did not properly check vital evidence of flights. He called for the police to re-examine the flight logs and interview the former duke…

Brown wrote in an article for the New Statesman: “The Epstein Files tell us in graphic detail how Epstein was able to use Stansted Airport – he boasted how cheap the airport charges were compared to Paris – to fly in girls from Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. His messages link at least one to Britain and the former Prince Andrew.”

Up to 90 flights linked to Epstein arrived or departed from UK airports between the early 1990s and 2018.

Essex Police said: “We are assessing the information that has emerged in relation to private flights into and out of Stansted Airport following the publication of the US DoJ Epstein files.”

It comes after it emerged that Mountbatten-Windsor, who has always vehemently denied wrongdoing, could be hauled in front of MPs for a grilling over his relationship with the convicted paedophile.

Cross-party MPs will meet next Tuesday to decide whether to open an investigation into Andrew’s work as a UK trade envoy after documents in the Epstein files appeared to show the former prince sharing confidential reports from the job with the paedophile financier.

Liam Byrne, who chairs the Commons Business and Trade Committee, said “nothing is off the table” and “MPs are not in the market for letting anything slip through the cracks”.

Sir Vince Cable, whose time as business secretary between 2010 and 2015 overlapped with Andrew’s envoy role, said the activity was “totally unacceptable” and suggested there should be an investigation for possible corruption.

Byrne told the BBC: “The committee has not had a chance to reflect on these allegations because recess means Parliament isn’t sitting this week.

“My task this week is to make sure that the committee has got options in front of them when they meet on Tuesday for how we might or might not take this investigation forward.

“Obviously, we can’t and don’t want to compromise a police investigation.”

Asked whether the committee could summon Mountbatten-Windsor to give evidence, Byrne said he did not want to “pre-judge where the committee is going to go on this at this stage”, adding: “at this stage, all I can say is, nothing is off the table”.

He said: “This is something we’re going to take acutely seriously and I can guarantee you that MPs are not in the market for letting anything slip through the cracks.”

Byrne confirmed to The i Paper that the committee would meet to discuss options on Tuesday.

Emails released as part of the so-called Epstein files earlier this month appear to show the former duke – who served as trade envoy between 2001 and 2011 – sharing reports of official visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore with the paedophile financier.

Thames Valley Police previously said they have held discussions with specialists from the Crown Prosecution Service about the allegations that the ex-royal shared confidential reports.

The force has also contacted their counterparts in the US in relation to claims Epstein procured a woman to travel to Windsor for “sexual purposes” involving Andrew in 2010.

Surrey Police is also engaging with “relevant agencies” to obtain access to unredacted files in relation to allegations involving Andrew and Epstein’s former associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

Reform leader Nigel Farage said Mountbatten-Windsor should “clearly” face a police investigation.

In response to a question from LBC at an event on Tuesday, he said: “Clearly, painful to say it about a member of the royal family, but clearly.”

He continued: “The Epstein case has lifted the lid. There are actually more questions than there were before the files were released, and yes, Prince Andrew does clearly have questions to answer, I’m afraid, sadly.”
