The ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden, who has been accused of killing his wife late last year, pleaded not guilty in the case during a virtual court appearance on Tuesday.
William Stevenson, a Delaware man who was briefly married to Biden decades ago, is facing a count of first-degree murder in connection with the slaying of his wife, Linda Stevenson. She was found in the couple’s home in the Wilmington area on Dec. 28, after authorities responded to the residence to investigate reports of a potential domestic violence incident.
When officers arrived on the scene around 11 p.m., they discovered Linda unresponsive in the living room, where she was pronounced dead a short time later despite first responders’ efforts to revive her, the New Castle County Police Department previously said.
Stevenson was the one who made the initial 911 call, and he was present when police arrived, TMZ reported, further noting that dispatch audio included mention of “cardiac arrest.” He was arrested following a weeks-long investigation into the matter and has been behind bars since February 3, given he failed to post his $500,000 bond. Few other details in the case, including Linda’s cause of death, have been provided. A motive for the slaying was also still unknown.
“One hug from her and all your worries would disappear,” her daughter, Christine Mae, wrote in a Facebook post. “The pain of losing her is paralyzing and the emptiness in my heart is an abyss.”

In her memoir, the former First Lady recalled meeting Stevenson while she was a student at the University of Delaware. Following their split, Biden married then-U.S. Sen. Joe Biden in 1977, and they remain together until this day. The former first lady and former President have not publicly commented on the murder case.
