Pam Bondi, Donald Trump’s hand-picked and ultra-loyal attorney general, says the Epstein Files are over, because everything has now been fully released.
It certainly seems to be the case that the White House wants this story to be done, and for the world to move on. But Bondi – and her boss – will almost certainly find that moving the world’s attention on is easily said than done.
The Department of Justice has released millions of documents connected to multiple investigations of Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. Those files contain hundreds or maybe even thousands of names of some of the world’s richest and most powerful men. There are billionaires in there – Bill Gates, Les Wexner, Elon Musk and his brother Kimbal, among many others.
There are also British royals and their associates – Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, his ex-wife Fergie and German businessman David Stern, who seems to have been something of a fixer in the group.
Politicians appear with disturbing regularity, like Peter Mandelson – perhaps the most prominent casualty of the files so far – and former president Bill Clinton, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, and, of course, Trump himself.
Meanwhile, there is very little trust from Epstein’s victims, their lawyers or the American public that Trump’s White House has disclosed everything.
This is an unusual issue in US politics, in that it cuts across party lines: Republicans care about this story just as much as Democrats. Between the Epstein Files and the horrors of the ICE crackdowns, Trump’s popularity keeps hitting new lows.

The documents were only supposed to be redacted to protect the name of victims, but hundreds of incidents have been found where the names of suspects were redacted – even as victims were accidentally named.
At the same time, lawyers have claimed there are documents missing from the supposedly complete files – something I can corroborate. As a reporter, I contacted Epstein and several of his associates early in 2015, when Prince Andrew (as he was then) was first named in an Epstein-related lawsuit. Some of those emails have appeared in the Epstein Files – but not all of them.
If those are missing, it is clearly not as complete as they say. Many others will have similar means of proving documents are missing. The pressure on the White House is not going to diminish.
Even if the documents story was over, and not a single new email or text was released, this is far from done. Congress is only just getting started on its own investigations, and it has the power to use subpoenas to compel witnesses to give evidence to its committees.

The committee is already considering issuing a subpoena to Bill Gates if he will not publicly testify. It has already been engaged in a heated back and forth as it tries to compel Bill and Hillary Clinton to give evidence – getting locked in a standoff because the Clintons want to give evidence publicly, but Republicans on the committee want a closed-door hearing.
Hillary Clinton in particular is punching back hard on the story, claiming she has nothing to hide and accusing the White House of engaging in a “cover-up” over the Epstein scandal.

No one can be made to testify without Republican say-so, meaning that in the short term, Trump’s close associates are likely safe. But the midterms are just months away, and Democrats are heavily expected to take control of the House – which would give them the power to demand evidence from anyone the Republicans leave out.
Trump’s approval rating sits at 40 per cent, the lowest it has been in his second term, and his disapproval rating is at 56 per cent.
Bondi gave evidence to the House Judiciary Committee last week on Epstein, and was openly contemptuous of her interlocutors, becoming hostile to the point of ridiculousness – suggesting the committee should instead be talking about how well the stock market is performing under Trump.
Bondi is supposed to be the independent, judicial figure overseeing the Epstein investigation and whether anyone can be brought to justice over it – at present only Ghislaine Maxwell is in jail. No one who saw her recent performance would have faith that she is diligently investigating the files.
The White House is caught in a trap of its own making. During the election, it thought it could use the Epstein story to embarrass Democrats, and then drop it without anyone noticing once in power. That hasn’t worked, and their obvious desperation to move the story on only makes it harder for them to do so.
That means the story will likely drag on, not just for weeks, but for months or years. Some of Epstein’s victims have waited decades already for justice. They are not about to let it go.
