1977 Classic Voted Greatest Song Sung by Female Rockers

When people talk about the greatest female rock singers of all time, the same names inevitably come up, year after year: Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, and, of course, Ann and Nancy Wilson.

It goes without saying that these women have earned their reputations as rock goddesses, but if you had to pick a "greatest" song sung by one of these outrageously talented vocalists, which one would it be? That's the question Ranker asked, and music lovers were quick to vote for their favorites.

The top 10 picks included tunes by nearly all of the women mentioned above, with some making repeat appearances. Coming in at #10 was "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac from the massively successful 1977 album Rumours, which happens to be shooting up the charts again 49 years after its release. Next up was Jett's "Bad Reputation" from her 1980 debut solo album of the same name.

Ranked at #8 was the utterly iconic Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" from her 1968 album with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Cheap Thrills, while Blondie's "Call Me" — released in 1980 as a single, when it also served as the theme for the movie American Gigolo — came in at #7.

Nicks popped up again in the #6 position with her 1981 hit "Edge of Seventeen" from her debut solo album, Bella Donna, followed by Benatar and her 1979 breakthrough single, "Heartbreaker" at #5.

The #4 spot went to the only song on the list from the '90s, "Zombie" by the Cranberries (1994), featuring late singer Dolores O'Riordan, with Jett popping back up again in third place thanks to her 1981 anthem "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," originally recorded by British rockers the Arrows.

The legendary Ann Wilson of Heart had the honor of taking both second and first place, with "Crazy on You" (1975) at #2 and "Barracuda" (1977) coming in first.

As Wilson later explained in an interview with Dan Rather, the lyrics to "Barracuda" were inspired by a "sleazy" guy's extremely inappropriate comment about her and sister/bandmate Nancy.

“Some really sleazy guy came up to me and implied to me that he was really turned on by the fact that me and Nance were lesbian incestual lovers,” she said. “That just really got him going in his fantasy, yeah. That made me so mad because I love my sister. Suddenly, my mother’s face, you know, came right up saying, ‘Don’t get into show business. It’s so tacky, full of sleazy people that are going to misunderstand you.’”

“It made me really angry, especially because I felt that they had attacked [Nancy’s] honor,” she added. "So, I went and wrote the words to 'Barracuda.' I just think, if I would have had a gun, I might have reacted differently to the guy. But thank goodness I didn’t.”

Decades later, that song is clearly still just as relevant as ever.
