Adam Sandler Pays Tribute to Robert Duvall: Funny as Hell. Strong as Hell.

News of Robert Duvall’s death had an immediate impact on actor and comedian Adam Sandler, who responded with some touching comments about Duvall. 'Loved him so much.' Sandler said, before praising the acting legend's body of work.

'Funny as hell. Strong as hell,' he wrote, before calling Duvall 'one of the greatest actors we ever had' and remembering him as 'such a great man to talk to and laugh with.'

Sandler and the then-91-year-old Duvall co-starred in Netflix’s Hustle (2022), a basketball drama in which Sandler plays longtime NBA scout Stanley Sugerman and Duvall appears as Rex Merrick, the Philadelphia 76ers’ old-guard owner who recognizes Stanley’s value and finally rewards his grind.

The film uses Duvall's Rex as a sort of moral anchor. His faith in Stanley is strong, and remains strong, as team politics build and then take over after Rex’s sudden death. It was a great piece of casting, as Duvall’s weathered persona grounded the emotional elements of the film.

Sandler’s tribute touches on the large body of incredible work Duvall leaves behind.

'So many movies to choose from that were legendary,' Sandler says, urging people to 'watch them when you can.'

'While he lived a long life, it still stings to see a legend go. May he rest in peace?,' one fan responded to Sandler.

'The older he got, the better his acting became,' another fan replied. 'Like aging fine wine or single malt. Not just that he had gained more experience as an actor, but that his own personality had become more genuine and shown through more as he aged.'

Sandler closed his tribute as a friend would, with condolences for Duvall’s wife, Luciana, and the wider circle of family and friends. It's clear the two shared a bond in their brief time working together, and that Sandler carried a deep respect for the Hollywood legend.

Duvall’s screen legacy is filled with performances that arte instantly recognizable to any movie fan. As Tom Hagen in The Godfather films, he made a consigliere feel indispensable and somewhat trapped. In Apocalypse Now, his Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore is a swaggering nightmare of appetite for war. He won the Best Actor Oscar for Tender Mercies, turning Mac Sledge into a touching (but not overly sentimental) study of recovery. And his work ranged wider still, from Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird to later, deeply personal turns such as The Apostle. He will be missed.
