SOUTH BRISTOL, N.Y. — Bristol Mountain Ski Resort is buzzing with excitement as two of its former ski team members compete in the Milan-Cortina Winter Games. Dylan Walczyk participated in men’s moguls, while Chris Lillis is set to compete in the men’s aerials qualifying round on Tuesday.
Steven Fuller, vice president of the resort, said many people taking ski and snowboard lessons have been inspired by the Olympics.
Another regular at Bristol Mountain said he tends to ski faster after watching the athletes on TV.
Lillis and Walczyk, when not competing overseas, help coach the current Bristol Mountain ski team, inspiring the next generation of skiers.
“It’s awesome, they know exactly what they’re talking about, they’re the best guys ever,” a team member said. “Yeah, it’s really nice to hear the Olympic coaching so we can follow up on their shoes and so everything they did to get that opportunity… it’s cool to have people who speak from a ton of experience coach us,” the team member added.
The athletes have set their sights on competing in the 2034 games in Salt Lake City. A watch party for Chris Lillis’s competition will take place at the resort, with doors opening at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
This season at Bristol
Bristol Mountain officials said the recent natural snowfall will help keep the mountain open later into the year.
“Best year probably since 2018. Yeah it’s fabulous all fresh snow. They didn’t have to make any snow after the storm hit in January. It’s fabulous,” said Charlie Avino, who has been going to Bristol since 1991 and is there about 45 days each year.
But you don’t need decades of experience to tell its been a good season.
“Yeah we’ve had a bunch of like nice powder days where we get to ski in the trees, which we don’t get to do a lot here and then it transitions right into these nice sunny Springs skiing days where everything is super soft and you can have a blast,” said Cody Swan, who is on the Bristol ski team.
So, what makes natural snow so nice to ski on?
“After we get that natural snow and we start to mix it in with the rest of the snow on the trail,” said Fuller. “It really makes for a fantastic service. That’s nice and easy to you know carve your skis through and ski down the mountain.”
Avino also added: “You’re floating you almost go weightless and it’s a feeling that you have to live to really understand, but it’s mostly feeling weightless and in control of the speed in the turn you can feel it up through your body”
Fuller said not only has the Olympics inspired people, but all the natural snow has more people taking lessons too.
“When you have that natural snow in your backyard and you’re watching on TV, it’s getting a lot of people excited,” said Fuller. “We actually had a great group the other night you know learning how to Nordic ski and it was one of those things where they were watching, you know the Nordic skiing on the Olympics and came out and had a fantastic time.”
