Welsh backstroker Ffion Humphreys will bring her talents stateside to compete for Washington State University beginning in the fall of 2026, the school announced on Instagram last month.
“We are so excited to have Ffion join us in Pullman,” said WSU head coach Russ Whitaker. “She will be an immediate asset for us in our backstroke group! Between that, her work ethic, international experience, and infectious personality – great things are in store for her. Welcome home Ffion!”

Humphreys, who trains with Swim Wales in Swansea, posted all of her short course meter personal bests at the club’s 2024 Winter Championships in December, finishing runner-up in the 200 back (2:12.74) and third in the 100 back (1:01.14).
Her long course times are more recent and paint a better picture of improvement, as she dropped over three seconds in the 200 back and nearly half a second in the 100 throughout 2025. She clocked her lifetime-best 2:17.90 in the 200 back at last June’s City of Sheffield SS Team Steel Meet before heading to the more competitive Aquatics GB Next Gen meet a month later, where she registered her 100 back best of 1:03.18. At Next Gen, she placed 10th in the 100 final (1:03.58) and 17th in the 200 (2:19.40), improving on her 11th (1:03.74) and 27th place finishes (2:20.95) from the 2023 edition of the meet.
When converting her best times from short course meters to yards, they come out to 55.08/1:59.58, while her long course times convert to 55.83/2:02.07. Given that her short course meters times are numerically better, that likely means she has some strong underwater skills, which translate favorably.
Top SCM/LCM Times (SCY conversions):
100 Backstroke: 1:01.14/1:03.18 (55.08/55.83) 200 Backstroke: 2:12.74/2:17.90 (1:59.58/2:02.07)It’s important to note that converted times are not 100% accurate and should be viewed as approximations. Still, they help provide some perspective on how Humphreys’ performances could translate.
A Division I program, Washington State competes in the Mountain West Conference with the likes of San Diego State and UNLV. The Cougars placed fifth out of ten teams at the conference meet before sending three athletes on to compete at the NCAA Division I Championship, where they finished 33rd.
Based on the results from last season’s Mountain West Conference Championships, Humphreys’ fastest converted times would have placed her in the ‘B’ finals of both backstroke events. It took times of 54.52 and 1:58.58 to earn a lane in the ‘A’ final, times that appear well within reach, assuming a smooth transition to short course yards. The team had one swimmer in each of the ‘A’ finals: current senior Anna Rauchholz (53.52) and current junior Ariel Wang (1:58.48) both finished sixth in their respective events.
On the team’s current depth chart, Humphreys would rank fourth in the 100 back and fifth in the 200 back, setting her up to be an immediate contributor. The majority of the backstroke group are current juniors, giving her the opportunity to learn from experienced upperclassmen during her freshman year before the group undergoes a youth movement. She and sophomore Wiktoria Palicka (55.65/1:58.34) will form the core of Washington State’s backstroke group moving forward, along with any future backstroke additions from the class of 2027.
The full list of recruits currently set to join Humphreys next fall includes Grace Carrington (breast), Lauren Sexton (breast/IM), Audrey Hill (sprint free/fly), Marlee Winser (sprint free), Ivy Ladrow (sprint free/fly), and London Hughes (fly/distance free), all of whom should make for strong training partners over the next four years.
