ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Mercedes Vazquez Simmons, a Democrat and vice president of the Monroe County Legislature, announced her candidacy for the New York State Assembly. She is running for the 137th District, which includes the northeast quadrant of the city, the city’s 19th Ward, and Gates.
“Many of the laws that impact our county come from the state level. And we don’t have that level of advocacy at the state level, so I’m hoping to change that. My goal is to be the voice of the community at the state level,” Vazquez Simmons said.
The 137th District is currently represented by Democrat Demond Meeks. News10NBC reached out to his office for comment and is waiting for a response.
