Spring Training is only Spring Training, and you can’t let the hype get to you too easily.
But you also must embrace the fun when it’s offered. Say, for example, when the Chicago Cubs’ ROY-runner-up fireballing righty is touching 98 mph in MID-FEBRUARY after sitting 95.5 mph in the regular season last year:
Cade Horton was touching 98 during a live BP and Craig Counsell said he was cruising. On the high expectations in year 2 for the ROY runner-up www.nytimes.com/athletic/704…

Look, you don’t want to start blowing it out TOO early in the calendar, given what has to be sustained over a long period of time. That’s especially true for Cade Horton, who took a big step forward in innings last year, and is expected to do it again this year. Often, starting pitchers don’t hit their peak velo for the year until May or June, even though that’s hardly any kind of rule.
But I have to trust the Cubs’ pitching infrastructure, and Horton, himself, to know how hard to push right now. If he’s touching 98 mph in mid-February, maybe it’s not because he’s slinging it as hard as he can, you know? Maybe that 96-98 mph range is just a pretty chill number for him at this point in his development.
How amazing would that be?
“We’ve really stressed to Cade a slow, steady build-up for the season,” manager Craig Counsell said, per The Athletic piece. “That’s what’s most important. He should have the feeling of he’s got a lot of time. He feels great, he’s in a great place.” Counsell offered no suggestion that Horton was really pushing it right now. Instead, “cruising” was the word he used. Love to hear it.
Meanwhile, it has to be pretty un-fun to face Cade Horton in live BP right now:
