As usual for this powerhouse, Rosemary is juggling more than most. She’s worried about the recent panic attack suffered by her husband, Lee (Kavan Smith), raising her young daughter, Goldie, and fostering Gwen (Alex Maclsaac), a strong-willed young girl from nearby Benson Hills who desperately needs stability after her father is hospitalized. Rosemary and Lee rise to the occasion with open arms.
“Rosemary started in the series quite self-involved and quite honestly, selfish. She came to town very self-serving, wanting to win back her ex-fiancé, and I don’t know if she had any intention of staying in Hope Valley,” Hutton recently told Parade.

Through her marriage to Lee and her deepening friendship with Elizabeth (Erin Krakow), Rosemary gradually discovered her place in the community. “She became integrated into the community, experienced tremendous growth, and saw the value of it,” she said, “She realized that she is one small part of a bigger picture and that her zest for life and creativity could be an asset to other people in this community – this is a huge evolution.”
Now, in addition to running the local newspaper and starting her own radio program, she decides to tackle the role of film director. This bold, theatrical turn feels perfectly suited to her. “It felt like Rosemary in her prime and in her glory, taking charge, bossing people around, creatively dynamic and at the forefront of it all. I loved that episode; it felt spot on.”

Creating a sweeping silent-film romance offered a refreshing departure from the emotional weight Rosemary has carried this season as mother, foster mother, and support person for the displaced Benson Hills families, who came to Hope Valley after losing everything in a tragic fire.
“This season, we hadn’t seen Rosemary so full of vigor,” Hutton said. “So, it felt well-earned and just so right in the best way.”
Teasing the remainder of Season 13 — without spoilers — Hutton said fans should expect some simmering relationships. “We couldn’t have When Calls the Heart without a hefty dose of romance,” Hutton said.
Kavan Smith and Pascale Hutton in the Hallmark series, 'When Calls the Heart'When it comes to more family-oriented storylines, Hutton said that Gwen came to the Coulter family “as an act of doing what was needed. Here is a little girl who doesn’t have anybody to care for her and doesn’t want to go with anybody. So, maybe we can convince her to come and stay with us because she is fond of Goldie, and that can kind of work.”
Family, however, remains the center of Rosemary’s journey, particularly when it comes to Gwen. While Hutton says that taking Gwen into their home wasn’t part of any grand plan, “There was an immediate need that had to be dealt with.”
She added, “What ends up transpiring is that her dad is injured, staying in the hospital and she can’t go to see him. So they have had to step up and take more of a parental role in Gwen’s life, and that hasn’t gone so smoothly.”
Looking ahead to this relationship, Hutton said, “As far as Rosemary and Lee, I don’t think the story of them with Gwen is done, yet; there’s more to go with Rosemary and Gwen,” she added. “And we see the evolution of that relationship between those two females finding their way to each other on their own terms and in their own time. It is really respectful and tender, the way it is written.”

Season 13 has greatly tested the mettle of the Coulter family, including the burning of Goldie Park, the loss of Rosemary’s beloved Playhouse, and Lee’s recent panic attack, which he initially thought was a heart attack.
“Rosemary takes her role as Lee’s wife very seriously, and she put a pause on everything so that she could be there for him,” Hutton said. “She approached it as she does most things in life; with great gusto!”
Ellie Sweiss, Kavan Smith, and Pascale Hutton in the Hallmark series, 'When Calls the Heart'When it comes to family dynamics, Hutton, the mother of two sons, one 10, and the other 15, says she is extremely excited about the three babies who are expected to come to Hope Valley for Season 14.

“My three good friends – Erin Krakow, Kevin McGarry, and Chris McNally -- are all having babies that I get to cuddle and nuzzle with. “People tell you all the time how fast it goes, but I just don’t think you realize it until a decade has gone by and you’re like, ‘holy cow.’ It really does go fast!”
Among the prominent guest stars this season is Melissa Gilbert, who returns as forensic inspector Georgie McGill.
“Melissa is great. She’s incredibly energetic and positive and supportive and has fabulous stories,” Hutton said. “She’s incredibly prepared, which is really nice to see from somebody who’s been working in this business for such a long time. She just has this innate work ethic, which is extremely inspiring.”
After 13 seasons, Hutton says her connection to Rosemary remains as strong as ever. “I really do love Rosemary. I think she’s so dynamic, fun, and challenging. What’s changed for me over the years is that not a second goes by in which I would take any of this for granted!”
When Calls the Heart airs on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/7 CT on Hallmark and the next day on Hallmark+
