In 1975, Linda Ronstadt soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her powerhouse rendition of Dee Dee Warwick’s “You’re No Good.” The song was originally released in 1963 and failed to chart for Warwick, but the Clint Ballard Jr.-penned track later gained traction through versions by Betty Everett and the British band The Swinging Blue Jeans before Ronstadt turned it into a chart-topping hit.
Ronstadt performed a version of "You're No Good" in her live set, using it as a closer to keep the excitement going, long after the show was over. So it was only natural that she chose to record it for her fifth solo studio LP, Heart Like a Wheel.
The tune was first released in late 1974. However, it took several months for it to climb its way up the charts, eventually hitting the top spot in February 1975.

Ronstadt told the Library of Congress in 2015 that the song, which would be her first and only No. 1 hit, was an "afterthought. She explained, "I still had a club act, and you always want to start with something up-tempo when you go on stage and something up-tempo when you come off stage. Then, in between, I would do ballads."
She continued, "I’m basically a ballad singer. It’s a good song. But not good for my voice."
"I like ballads, something with a big melodic reach. We changed the arrangement from what we had done on stage. The band truly came up with it, the guitar player came up with the riff, and the bass player doubled it. Andrew Gold built a great guitar solo into it. I like the track better without my singing on it," Ronstadt concluded.
Billboard called the song a "blues-tinged, fierce kiss-off" in a 2023 list of 15 essential Ronstadt tracks. They added it remains "a classic of ’70s soft rock."
Linda Ronstadt lives in California. She retired from performing in 2011.
