Runway legend and longtime America's Next Top Model judge and mentor Miss J. Alexander had a massive career after leaving the hit reality show in 2012, but "everything changed" when he suffered a medical emergency in 2022.
"On Dec. 27, 2022, I had a stroke," he revealed on the new Netflix docuseries Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, which was released on Feb. 16. "I spent five weeks in a coma, and I couldn't walk, and I couldn't talk. And I thought to myself, what was I going to do?... I'm the person who taught models how to walk, and now I can't walk."
The reality star, who also worked on Top Model Russia and Top Model China following his ANTM reign and supported the Savanna College for Art and Design for 15 years, was heartbroken by his health crisis. "It was emotional, I cried. I'm not ashamed to say I cried," he said. Luckily, he had his old friends to lean on: "Once I was in the hospital, Jay [Manuel] and Nigel [Barker] came to visit."
View this post on Instagram"I don't know whether he even wanted me to see him in that way, but I was going to go see him," Barker remembered, calling what happened to Miss J. "a terrible shock." "He was happy to see me and the two of us cried together and I held him."
"I could feel how upset he was, for sure," Manuel added. But the silver lining was that the crisis reunited the dynamic trio, who starred in ANTM together for nearly a decade. "I thought back to how we used to do shows together," said Alexander. "I cried because I just missed them so much."
The group reunited again for the Netflix documentary series, and it made for a touching moment. "It has been a journey, and you're speaking so much better now," said Manuel, while an emotional Barker hugged his old friend.
"You're battling through. You're sitting up doing an interview. Chatting, talking, rolling your eyes. Making us laugh," said the photographer. "It's a long journey, but you're going to get there. I know it's been really, really hard."
"I'm glad to be all together," said Miss J. But the group was missing one notable person: longtime host Tyra Banks. "Did Tyra come and visit you?" asked a producer during the doc. "No, not yet," said Alexander. "She just sent me a text that she wants to come and visit me, but no. Not yet."
While Miss J. can't deny he "misses being the queen of the runway," he still has hope for the future. "I'm determined to walk. It's not all for me, yet," he insisted.
Miss J. has been almost completely absent from social media since the stroke, which he hasn't opened up about until now. He broke his social media silence on Feb. 13, sharing several selfies with afros for Black History Month. "Girl where have you been hiding. Haven’t seen you in forever. Glad you are back," said one fan, to which Alexander responded, "Girl all will revealed in the Documentary."
What Happened to Miss J. Alexander on America's Next Top Model?
Banks fired Alexander, Manuel, and Barker from the show in April 2012, after Mark Pedowtiz succeeded Dawn Ostroff as head of The CW network.
"I took [Pedowitz's] call, and I'll never forget, he said: 'The show is the biggest thing in the world, but it won't always be, and it's taking a dip. And there are no sacred cows,'" Banks recalled in the doc. "You have to let go of this, this, and this.' Three of my hearts: Mr. Jay, Miss J., and Nigel."
Alexander admits he was fully blindsided by the unexpected move. "For my birthday, Tyra sent me flowers, I thought 'Oh, how sweet.' There was a note, it said, 'Happy birthday, love Tyra,'" he recalled. "And then I was fired five days later."
"Come on, give me a break. I was the spine of the show," he expressed. "And then, bye!"
Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model is now streaming on Netflix.
