Kim entered the Milan Cortina Games chasing history. She aimed to become the first snowboarder to win three straight Olympic gold medals in the halfpipe. Despite competing with a dislocated shoulder that required a brace and heavy taping, she led qualifying with a 90.25 score.
In the final, Kim landed a switch double cork 1080 and an inverted 540 on her first run, scoring 88.00. However, South Korea’s Gaon Choi earned a higher score on her final attempt, pushing Kim into second place. Kim fell during her last run but held on to the silver medal.
“I’m so proud of myself for getting through and fighting,” Kim said after the event.
While her quest for a historic three-peat ended, her resilience stood out. And just as meaningful was Garrett’s presence in the crowd. After finishing his NFL season, he made sure to be there for her biggest competition.
