A 33-year-old man died in police custody early Saturday morning.
Tuscaloosa Police Department officers responded to a reported crime in progress at 1900 North Rice Mine Road at approximately 3:20 a.m. Saturday, where callers reported a male acting suspiciously in the complex.
According to Sgt. Suzanne Spencer of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, the man appeared to be in an altered mental state as officers interacted with him and his family members who were present. Officers on the scene said the man told them he’d ingested an unspecified drug before they arrived.
Officers said he became combative with them as they spoke with him and family members present. He became unresponsive during a struggle with officers, who began administering CPR as medical personnel were called.
The man was declared deceased at a local hospital. There were no signs of trauma, according to Spencer.
VCU investigators are conducting the investigation, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave per department policy, according to TPD administration.
