From prospect to producer: Myles Upchurch delivers in collegiate debut

Freshman right-hander Myles Upchurch delivered a dominant performance in his highly anticipated collegiate debut, leading Alabama baseball to an 11–1 win over Washington State in Saturday’s series finale to clinch the opening weekend series.

Upchurch allowed just two hits while striking out nine batters across four shutout innings and was credited with the win. The freshman showcased poise, command and a swing-and-miss arsenal that made him one of the most highly regarded recruits in Alabama’s 2025 class.

Head coach Rob Vaughn praised the freshman’s advanced approach on the mound, particularly his ability to mix pitches and keep hitters off balance.

“Myles executing the right-on-right change-up, just doing some advanced stuff for a young freshman pitcher, makes that heater play up even more,” Vaughn said.

A 6-foot-4-inch, 220-pound native of Odenton, Maryland, Upchurch arrived in Tuscaloosa with an impressive resume. He was ranked the No. 78 overall prospect in the nation coming out of high school, the No. 16 right-handed pitcher, and the No. 2 player in Maryland, earning attention for both his physical build and polished pitch mix.

Upchurch features a four-pitch repertoire: a fastball that typically sits between 93 and 95 mph and has touched 97, along with a wipeout slider, a sharp curveball and a change-up.

Vaugh said Upchurch came into the game “extremely polished.”

“His stuff is good. It’s going to be a mid-90s heater with a really good up-and-down breaking-ball feel on the slider. His best pitch might be his changeup,” Vaugh said.

Before arriving at Alabama, Upchurch starred at St. Albans High School in Washington, D.C., where he was a three-sport athlete competing in football, basketball and baseball. His talent on the diamond drew professional interest, and he was selected in the 19th round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds.

Upchurch ultimately chose to forgo professional baseball and honor his commitment to Alabama, a decision that already appears to be paying dividends for the Crimson Tide pitching staff.

Left-handed pitcher Zane Adams, who also struck out nine batters Saturday in Game 1 of the doubleheader, had high praise for Upchurch and said he expected the freshman to deliver a strong outing.

“He has a good fastball, a good changeup, a really good curveball,” Adams said on Upchurch’s debut. “I knew he was gonna have a good outing today. I told him in the locker room before, ‘If you just throw strikes, you’ll be good,’ and that’s what he did.”

Upchurch’s debut reinforced Alabama scouts’ hopes, bringing lights-out stuff into a Sunday role behind Tyler Fay and Adams in the weekend rotation.
