ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul has announced $3.8 million to the New York State African American Heritage Grant Program (NYS AAH) on Sunday, meant to highlight sites and connect people to black history throughout the state.
It aims to specifically promote the history and achievements of African Americans.
The project is split into two categories: education projects and capital projects. Upwards of $2.8 million will go towards education projects, documentation, and research. Up to $1 million will go towards capital projects to help plan and develop new and existing buildings and sites.
The program is funded through the state appropriation to the Commission on African American History, focusing on the time periods of 1627 (when slavery first arrived in New Amsterdam, now called New York), to 1975 (latter part of Black Arts and Black Power movements).
The NYS AAH will also help local governments in the effort.
“We look forward to working with community partners to foster a greater understanding of Black New Yorkers’ contributions to our state,” said Hochul.
