California State Runner-Up Alex Pletcher Stays In-State with Commitment to Stanford for 2027

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Sea to Desert Swim Association’s Alex Pletcher has pledged his commitment to further his academic and athletic career at Stanford University beginning in the fall of 2027.

Pletcher was mentioned as an honorable mention in SwimSwam’s way-too-early rankings of the top 20 recruits in the boys’ high school class of 2027.

Pletcher announced his commitment on Instagram with the following caption:

    Go Get ‘Em. GO CARD!

Pletcher hails from San Diego, California, and represents Point Loma High School, where he has competed as a two-sport athlete, also playing football. As a sophomore, Pletcher raced in a pair of individual events at the CIF State Championships in May, both of which placed in the top four. In the 200 freestyle, he finished runner up, stopping the clock in 1:35.63, he also added a 4th place finish in the 100 free, finishing in 44.19. Both performances stood as his fastest swims ever at the time, and his 200 free still stands as his fastest.

In December, Pletcher had a productive showing at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin. There, he set a number of best times and had several finals appearances; his highest placing came in the 200 free, where he finished 4th in 1:35.73. He also clocked a career best 43.70 in a swimoff in the 100 free, and finished 8th overall in 44.10. Pletcher logged additional best times in the 50 free (20.15), 100 butterfly (48.56), and the 200 fly (1:47.85).

In his career, Pletcher has been named to a pair of USA Swimming Scholastic All-American teams, and is a multi-time NISCA All-American.

    Best Times SCY:

    50 Free: 20.15 100 Free: 43.70 200 Free: 1:35.63 500 Free: 4:33.80 100 Fly: 48.56 200 Fly: 1:47.85

Pletcher joins a Stanford men’s team that finished runners-up to Cal at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships a season ago.

Comparing Pletcher’s times to those championships, he would have finished 33rd in the 200 free, tied for 42nd in the 100 free, and  42nd in the 200 fly.

Pletcher is not far outside of scoring position in the ACC (top 24 score), especially when you factor in the fact that he still has a season and a half still to go before he makes his collegiate debut for the Cardinal.

There is an enticing range with Pletcher, and one that he is much more than just proficient in across the board. He has that additional 500 free as a back pocket event, but the 100 and 200 free will likely be his main events for Stanford throughout his career.

Pletcher still has his junior and senior state championships to swim, and a number of summer, and winter junior national meets ahead of him, with potential for these future meets to make these current best times a thing of the past.

Pletcher joins a loaded 2027 recruiting class for Stanford that includes Luke Vatev, Soren Carlson, Jacob Bougaieff, Connor Christopherson, Owen Ekk, and Yi Zheng.
