MJ Valentine’s Day Memories, ‘Second-Draft’ Bulls, Adam Silver in Trouble? Zach’s Season-Ending Surgery, Other Bullets

Happy Valentine’s Day, Chicago Bulls fans! Beyond spending time with your sweetheart, it’s a day to remember one of the rare times Michael Jordan did not wear his No. 23 or No. 45 jersey during a game! His jersey was stolen ahead of that night’s tilt against the Scott Skiles-era Orlando Magic, so he was compelled to wear No. 12.

It didn’t seem to disrupt his flow much, however, as the Hall of Fame shooting guard dropped a casual 49 points on Orlando.

Happier times. Orlando actually prevailed in overtime, 135-129.

Jordan scored his 49 points on 21-of-43 shooting from the floor and 7-of-10 shooting from the foul line, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Scottie Pippen, Bill Cartwright and reserve Craig Hodges all notched 15 points.

Thanks to their new post-trade deadline additions, the Bulls have become a major “second draft” team as they wrap up the season while embracing the tank, observes Fred Katz of The Athletic. As Katz notes, former lottery picks Jaden Ivey and Rob Dillingham have joined a new Chicago core that also includes former Thunder lottery selection Josh Giddey. Chicago head coach Billy Donovan has high expectations for Dillingham, but believes the 6-foot-2 combo guard has major room for improvement.

“The decision-making, the shots that he’s taking, are not sustainable. And I told him that,” Donovan said, according to Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic. “His job and responsibility is to generate shots for guys when he gets there… it’s not like I’m giving him free rein. We need him downhill, but he also can’t be jumping off of two feet, getting caught in the air, shooting over guys, trying to throw passes that aren’t there.”

Chicago forward Matas Buzelis served as a key contributor to Hall of Fame swingman Vince Carter’s champion “Team Vince” squad during All-Star Weekend’s Rising Stars tournament Friday. Although V.J. Edgecombe walked away with MVP honors after closing out both of Team Vince’s victories, Buzelis showed off a versatile bag, which included his growing aptitude for blocking shots and some fancy low post footwork. Ahead of the game, Buzelis revealed that he hopes to one day graduate to Sunday’s All-Star event, per Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times.

“Everything is exciting for me still,” Buzelis said. “Anything you get to participate in is an honor and exciting. But I’m not going to lie: Yeah, I want to be in that Sunday game for sure.”

Sadly, a lot of Los Angeles was not on-hand to see the first Rising Stars game. Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell was on hand for the tournament, and captured a shot of an eerily vacant Intuit Dome. It’s an indictment of the league’s fumbling of All-Star Weekend as a whole, but also, perhaps, it speaks to a growing apathy towards a lot of the events. It’s hardly a secret that Saturday night’s schedule remains the most fun All-Star slate, as the Rising Stars event and All-Star Game format continue to change seemingly year-to-year to goose engagement. It’s a rough product.

    — Noa Dalzell ? (@NoaDalzell) February 14, 2026 Recent weeks have seen league commissioner Adam Silver come under fire for a lot of inscrutable NBA decisions. Interest in the regular season appears to have waned lately. A lack of defense, extended late-game reviews, an overly complicated CBA, exorbitant ticket prices and inconsistent availability have all proven problematic. Dan Le Batard recently called out Silver for being deeply beholden to NBA owners.

    — Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz (@LeBatardShow) February 12, 2026 Among Silver’s blunders is his frequent mishandling of the league’s various scandals. Silver named Los Angeles Clippers small forward Kawhi Leonard to his seventh All-Star team for this weekend. The two-time Finals MVP will play at the Clippers’ home arena, Intuit Dome, on Sunday. Per Joe Vardon and Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, Leonard remains the subject of an active league investigation for his role in a potential salary cap-circumvention scheme with fraudulent Clippers sponsor Aspiration. LA could be hit with a $7.5 million fine, the team could lose even more draft picks, or Leonard’s entire remaining $100.3 million contract could be nullified. And yet, he’s going to represent the league at his home arena in a celebration of the sport. Bulls alum Zach LaVine‘s season from hell with the Sacramento Kings will finally, mercifully come to an end. Chris Haynes of Amazon Prime Video reports that the 6-foot-5 former two-time All-Star is set to have right hand surgery following the All-Star break. The UCLA product will be sidelined for the rest of 2025-26. The 12-44 Kings have dropped their last 14 games in a row, and will now lose their best scorer. At least they’re facing a stacked 2026 NBA Draft class? To the surprise of absolutely no one, it’s been revealed once again that 41-year-old Los Angeles Lakers All-Star forward LeBron James will be a late scratch for Sunday’s All-Star competition, per Marc Stein of The Stein Line. The 21-time All-NBA standout was a surprise inclusion among the coaches’ All-Star reserves, as he’s missed much of the season with health issues and has pretty clearly been only the third-best Laker, behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Reaves likely would have made the cut over James had he not been sidelined for a month himself with a left calf injury. Speaking of league investigations, embattled sharpshooter Malik Beasley has opted to ink a deal with multi-platinum superstar Bad Bunney’s Puerto Rican squad, Santurce Crabbers, sources inform Shams Charania of ESPN. Beasley failed to latch on with an NBA squad in free agency this past summer. He continues to be investigated for (allegedly) improperly betting on games during his 2023-24 season with the Milwaukee Bucks. He had been on track to earn something in the range of $15-20 million a season after a career year on the Detroit Pistons in 2024-25. He’ll now make decidedly less than that with the Santurce Crabbers.
