Despite laying it all on the line across snow and ice, Day 7 of the Winter Olympics came and went with no medal for Team GB.
Then Matt Weston changed everything at Milano Cortina 2026.
The skeleton racer stormed to gold with a sensational performance, setting track records on all four runs and sealing victory with a combined time of 3:43.33.
“It means everything. It means a hell of a lot to me personally – I’ve worked so hard for this,” Weston told BBC Sport, having missed out on the Olympic podium four years ago.
“But everyone back home – my fiancée, my family, my friends – everyone who has sacrificed everything for this. I’ve missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment. It feels amazing. Hopefully I made you proud.”
Watching from the BBC studio was Lizzy Yarnold, a two-time Olympic skeleton champion, who was full of praise for Weston’s flawless display.
“Every single one of the four runs were absolute perfection,” she said.
“Incredibly impressive from Matt Weston. What stands out for me is that every time he stood at the start block, looking down the track, he excelled. He accelerated, he was so focused. I really can’t find the words to describe how incredibly impressed I am with his performance.”
Yarnold was then overcome with emotion, prompting presenter Clare Balding to pause the interview, continuing her commentary while giving Yarnold a moment to compose herself.
Balding is one of four presenters leading the BBC's Winter Olympics coverage – but the BBC isn't the only broadcaster showing the Games.
