Chicago police are investigating a brazen armed robbery during which a man was held at gunpoint in broad daylight in the West Loop neighborhood.
The incident was caught on cellphone video near North Peoria and West Lake streets at around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday.
Some expressed a heightened sense of awareness after hearing what happened to the 49-year-old victim.
“I was surprised that it happened in broad daylight,” said Rachel Wickstrom, who is visiting Chicago for work.
“You wouldn’t think that with a bunch of people walking around that someone would do something like that,” said Rachel’s husband, Will Wickstrom.
An eyewitness captured cellphone video from an Uber, showing the victim on the ground, trying to shield himself from the robbers.
The robbers demanded the victim’s items and hit him before jumping back in their SUV and driving away. It’s unclear what was taken.
The witness called 911, and police said the victim refused medical treatment.
“I am furious, our community is furious. We’re not going to tolerate it,” said executive director Roger Romanelli of the Fulton Market Association.
Romanelli told NBC Chicago he has been sounding the alarm and pushing for more police cameras in the area.
“We can’t expect the police to be patrolling every day, what we have to put in place is the right system to prevent criminals and catch them if they make a big mistake, and that’s got to start with security cameras, that’s got to start with police cameras,” he explained.
Ald. Walter Redmond Burnett, who represents the 27th Ward, told NBC Chicago in a statement the safety of constituents is a top priority, and police will step up their presence in the West Loop.
“While this situation is concerning, we have full confidence in the Chicago Police Department to continue monitoring the area and taking appropriate action,” he said. “Our focus remains on maintaining safety and supporting our community.”
At least one local business says police are regularly present in the area.
“The police are always on patrol, they’re on foot, they stop by, they speak, they’re always next door,” said store manager Ashley Shannon, JARS by Fabio Viviani.
According to Chicago police data, robberies are down compared to this time last year in the city’s 12th Police District. So far this year, 29 robberies have been reported, which is a sharp decrease from the 69 robberies reported during the same time in 2025.
The manager of the dessert shop admits she’s being extra vigilant, as the crime happened right in front of her store.
“I was just talking to my coworker, I don’t know how to feel honestly because I’m in here all the time,” she said. “I just think as long as we all stick together and watch out for each other, that’s all we can do, really.”
The Fulton Market Association is holding a community public safety meeting with Chicago police next from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 171 N. Aberdeen.
