The fourth-ranked UCLA women’s gymnastics team has momentum on its side going into Saturday’s Big Ten meet against No. 9 Michigan.
Last week, the Bruins (8-2 overall, 4-0 Big Ten) maintained their unbeaten record in Big Ten meets with a 197.550-197.275 victory at No. 17 Minnesota. The depth of UCLA’s roster is clear, but wo-time Olympian Jordan Chiles continued to set the pace with her fourth perfect 10 in as many weeks, her third in a row on floor exercise.
In addition to Chiles’ continued success, junior Katelyn Rosen posted a season-best 9.900 on the balance beam last week. Rosen credits consistency as the key to her growth.
“Gymnastics is a weird sport. It’s hard to be perfect every single time, unless you’re Jordan Chiles,” Rosen said. “I don’t know exactly how she does it. But I am very consistent in training on beam. You know, thanks to Lacy [Degan]. She’s one of the best beam coaches I’ve ever had.
“So for me, it’s really just getting my excitement versus my nerves to the perfect level. When I’m in my zone, and when I’m in my flow, that’s when it all clicks and that’s when it goes really, really well for me. So, it’s just a matter of getting into that headspace every single time that I’m up to compete.”
Saturday’s meet at Pauley Pavilion is UCLA’s annual alumni meet, and alumni celebrations and recognitions will be sprinkled throughout the event.
NCAA champion and Honda Award winner Peng-Peng Lee will sing the national anthem, and UCLA Hall of Fame inductee Brittani McCullough and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Kyla Ross will be recognized. All UCLA gymnastics alumni will be recognized on the floor after the meet.
This week, UCLA gymnastics head coach Janelle McDonald spoke about something her team does before every meet.
“We do a send-off, pretty much whether we’re home or away,” she said. “It’s basically a moment where the parents and family and friends get to just really bring some hype for the team. It lets us head off into the competition with a lot of energy, and having people like Big Mike, who have supported the program for years and years, it just means a lot to our team. For them to just always be a consistent face that’s there supporting us, and knowing we have all those family and friends in our corner, heading into a competition. It just … it means a lot. It really is the Bruin family, and that’s the feel of the send-off each and every week.”
The athletes believe having that celebratory energy before a meet helps set them up for success.
The presence of Lee could bring additional energy. Before she retired in 2018, the member of the 2012 Canadian Olympic team was a UCLA gymnast who was known for her incredible talent but also for her outgoing energy. Her personality stood out in a variety of ways, including wearing her hair in a style of two buns sitting side by side. Her smile lit up the arena, something the current Bruins hope to continue doing themselves.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
Michigan has an average team score of 197.035. The Wolverines rank No. 3 in the nation on the balance beam with a 49.430 average and have scored as high as 49.650 on the event. They rank No. 11 on the uneven bars and No. 14 on the vault and the floor. The Wolverines have two athletes who remain from their 2021 national championship team – graduate students Carly Bauman and Reyna Guggino.
